The Retro Hacky Sack Pattern

Introducing the Retro Hacky Sack Pattern. Hacky Sacks are a throw-back to the 80’s and regaining in popularity right now. They are a great way to build community and inter-generational fun. All ages can get involved in playing Hacky Sack.

The most common game of hacky sack or footbag consists of two or more players standing in a circle and trying to keep the sack off the ground for as long as possible.  It can be a lot of fun.

Hack sacks also make great stress balls. When we’re stressed out, our bodies tense up and we physically clench. The stress ball prompts you to squeeze and release, which can leave you feeling less tense than you started. The benefit of squeezing a stress ball is that it releases some kind of energy and induces you to relax.

I like to make my Retro Hacky Sacks from bright cheery colours and when I take them to the market to sell, people love to be able to pick out the hacky sack that speaks to them. I fill them with pop corn and they are the perfect feel and weight for hacky sack fun This crochet pattern is a great stash busting project for all your odd leftover colours.

Description of the Retro Hacky Sack.

The Retro Hacky Sack Pattern uses the simple single crochet stitch and is worked in the round. I use a worsted weight (4) yarn and a  2.5mm hook to get the tight stitch required to hold the pop-corn inside with none slipping through the stitches. It is beginner friendly and just a little fiddly at the end as you close it up and try to keep all the pop-corn inside.

By using up your stash you can create some really fun and colourful hacky sack, each one has its own personality.

All About the Yarn.

For this pattern I decided to use Red Heart Super Saver yarn as it comes in so many vibrant and fun colours. Red Heart Super Saver yarn is so versatile and can be used in so many different types of projects. I used it for some of my Dreamer Beanies and also for my Black and White Striped Cushion pattern. It is also great for Cozies for your Tea Pots, Mason Jars or even your mugs.

When choosing yarn to use with my Retro Hacky Sack Pattern I decided on Red Heart Super Saver, as I loved the colour choices in this yarn and it made it an easy choice.  I love all the great Red Heart colours

Colourways:

Red Heart Super Saver yarn comes in 149 different colourways. 149!!! You don’t even have to worry about matching dye lots as the colours never deviate. It is such a user friendly yarn.

Red Heart Super Save is a medium weight worsted weight yarn with a number 4 on the label.

The solid colour skeins are 7 oz (198 grams) and approximately 364 yards (333 metres).

Sizes:

This pattern was designed for a regular hacky sack. Approx 6.5 ” in circumference.

Instructions:

The Retro Hacky Sack is created in the round.

Chain 4 and sl st into first stitch to make a small circle.   You may also begin with the magic loop if you prefer. Magic loops ensure a tighter closing.

Round 1: Ch 1, Make 6 sc into the small circle space. Join with slst to the top of the chain 1 (6 dc stitches)

Place a stitch marker. You will now start to work in a spiral and you can move the stitch marker up after each round is completed to help with completing the row counts accurately. If you don’t have a commercial stitch marker you can always place a piece of contrasting yarn in between the stitches to mark where you are.

Note: You do not join the rows at the end of each round with a sl st and ch1, to begin the new round.  You continue around in a spiral.

Round 2: Ch 1, Make 2 sc into the next stitch and make 2sc into each stitch around. (12 sc st) Move the stitch marker up.

Round 3: Ch 1, *Make 2 sc into the next st, make 1 sc into the next st,* repeat  between * and * around to the stitch marker.  (18 sc ) Move the stitch marker up.

Round 4: *Make 2 sc into the next st, make 1 sc into each of the next 2 st* repeat between * and * around to the. stitch marker.  (24 sc) Move the stitch marker up.

Round 5-9:  sc into each st (24 st) Move the stitch marker up after each row.

Round 10: *sc 2 tog, make 1 sc into each of the next 2 st*, repeat between * and * to the st marker. (18 st)

Round 11: *sc 2 tog, sc in the next st*  repeat between * and * to the st marker. (12st)

Add popcorn kernels into the hacky sack.  I used a small spoon but you can use a small funnel if you like.  I also stretch the hacky sack as I fill it to make sure it will not stretch later when it is being used.

Fill it as full as you can and then begin to close the opening.

Row 12: sc 2 tog, all the way around. (6 st)

Try and get a few more kernels of popcorn into the sack and then

continue to sc 2 tog until it is too difficult to carry on.

Fasten off with a long tail.  Thread this tail into your yarn needle and use this tail to weave in and out of the top of your hacky sack, completing the closure.

Thread the yarn back and forwards through the body of the hacky sack several times. Cut yarn.

Remember your hacky sack will be being kicked so you need to make sure it is really securely fastened off.
