Crochet Chunky Messy Bun Hat Free Pattern: The Maisy Messy Bun Hat

Introducing the Maisy Crochet Chunky Messy Bun Hat

This crochet chunky messy bun hat is modelled on my chunky beanie. I wanted to create a beginner friendly chunky messy bun hat with the same stitches as my chunky beanie pattern and I love how it turned out.
I love the top down construction style and the back loop only single crochet brim.

Crochet Chunky Messy Bun Hat

The Maisy Crochet Chunky Messy Bun Hat is great for those who always rock their messy buns.

This crochet Chunky Messy Bun Hat is beginner friendly and super easy to whip up. Messy bun hats are so popular at the moment as they have an opening at the top of the hat. This means you can wear a hat while also wearing your messy bun or even a ponytail as it can fit right through the hole on the top of your messy bun hat.  This is a perfect project for a quick gift and uses only the double crochet and single crochet stitches.

Inspiration for The Maisy Crochet Chunky Messy Bun Hat

The inspiration for my Maisy Crochet Chunky Messy Bun Hat  was fuelled by requests from market goers for a chunky style hat they could wear without squishing their messy buns .
Up to now all my messy bun hats have been made with worsted weight (4) yarn so I had to come up with a version of the messy bun hat that would use the super bulky Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn that is my go to yarn for nearly all of my winter hats and headband projects.
I wanted this to be a beginner friendly pattern that also had a great style and fit.  I decided to take inspiration from my most popular hat design, my Chunky Beanie Crochet Pattern , and I came up with a way to create the hole in the top of the hat while keeping the cool look and feel of the Chunky Beanie. I am pleased with the Maisy Chunky Messy Bun hat as it keeps the same characteristics as the original chunky beanie and the brim made with the back loop only single crochet stitches ensures a great fit.

Are You Looking For Some Other Ideas for Beanies or Hats.

Beanies and hats are such a great crochet project as they don’t take to long to make and you end up with a useful accessory for yourself or to gift to someone or even donate to a charity.
This Slouchy Beanie  pattern is a great idea for someone new to crochet as it is beginner friendly You also might also enjoy my Chunky Beanie Crochet Pattern.  This beanie is really quick to whip up as it uses a large 15mm crochet hook and super bulky (6) weight yarn. I also have a cute striped bucket hat pattern you may love.
If you know someone who has just undergone chemo and needs a pretty hat to wear that is light and soft to the touch you might want to make them the Diane Beanie.  This is simple to make as it only uses the single crochet stitch.

Special Stitch for this project.

For this hat you need to do the single crochet back loop only stitch. (scblo). This is used to create the brim of this hat.
You will be working with single crochet, but it is done into the back loop of the stitch.
I created a video showing how to do the back loop only technique using the single crochet stitch and posted it onto youtube for you. I hope this helps you understand how to work into the back loop of the stitch.
