Why I Love The Iris Clutch Bag.
Hi everyone. I am so excited to share this new crochet clutch bag free pattern with you. The Iris Clutch crochet pattern makes up so fast and is also a great stash busting project. Make the body of the bag in a solid colour with a contrasting colour for the flap.
Use the Iris Clutch bag free pattern to make an elegant and trendy purse that is so versatile. You can carry your clutch bag as an accessory for all your special occasions. It also perfect for around the home. I find it is just the right size to carry my crochet journal and a pen along with some hooks. Make it from the Blossom Pink and Fisherman colours I chose, or you can go for more neutral colours if that is your preference. The choice is yours.
Description of my Iris Crochet Clutch bag Pattern:
The Iris Clutch Bag is created as a rectangle made with half double crochet stitches. I used half double crochet stitches as they create a dense fabric for the purse which will keep things from slipping through the stitches. This means you don’t need to make a lining for the bag. Once the body is finished, you cut the main colour and join in the contrasting colour for the flap and work the Iris Stitch as described below.
This crochet clutch bag free pattern explains all you need to know to complete this lovely gift item. You will be surprised how quickly you can whip this up in time for Mother’s Day.
Design Inspiration for this crochet clutch bag free pattern
The inspiration for this clutch bag was the beautiful, yet simple lacy Iris Stitch. That is why I called it the Iris Clutch Bag. A few years ago when I first started making purses and bags, I tried this stitch with a clutch that I made and sold at my local market. People really loved the feminine feel of the bag created by the lace like flap.
I did not write the pattern down at the time. As Mother’s Day approached I decided to recreate the purse. I thought that it was the perfect design for a Mothers Day gift. It even works as a gift for some other occasion such as a birthday, or even Christmas.
I originally made the body of the clutch purse in yellow, but I thought pink would be more suitable as a special Mother’s Day Gift. You can of course, make the body of the bag out of any colour you choose. Just customize it to suite your personal needs.
Another great gift idea for Mother’s Day would be some of my Crochet Heart Mug Cozies. I designed these with Valentine’s Day in mind, but they cross over as a thoughtful and loving Mother’s Day gift as well.

All About the Yarn.
For this pattern I decided to use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn.
Lions Brand Thick and Quick yarn is a super bulky (6) weight yarn and the reason I chose it for the Iris Clutch Bag is that its thickness adds stability to the bag. A lighter weight yarn would have made something that was too floppy as a clutch purse. I decided on the Blossom Pink as it is such a soft, dusky pink and perfect for Mothers Day. For the flap I chose Fisherman, as the soft white is perfect for the lacy Iris stitch.
Lions Brand Thick and Quick yarn is also a soft, warm blend of lamb’s wool and easy-care acrylic. (80% Acrylic; 20% Wool)
This yarn is so versatile and can be used in so many different types of projects. I have used it for my all time favourite Freedom beanie pattern. The ready to ship custom order Freedom Beanie has also been a top seller for me at the markets I attend.
For my Iris Clutch Bag this yarn meets two of my top requirements. It is strong and serviceable, holding its shape well, and it also comes in some beautiful Thick and Quick colours that are great for spring and Mother’s Day.
Lions Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick comes in a great range of solid colours which are typically 6 oz / 106 yds (170 g / 97 m). You can also find some of the colourways available in a Bonus Bundle, which is twice the size of a regular skein.
Care instructions for Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick.
Lion Brand Thick and Quick is Machine Wash, Machine Dry.
When you machine wash this yarn the initial water temperature should not exceed 40C or 105F. If you choose to you can also Dry Clean projects made with this yarn. No bleach product may be used.
A machine dryer may be regularly used at the hottest available temperature setting. Just do not iron your projects made from this yarn.

The Flap
This is worked in the Iris Stitch as described above in the Special Stitches Section.
Row 1: Ch 3, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the next st, *sk3 st, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in the next st, * repeat from * to * until 2 st remain, sk a st, dc into the last st. Turn

Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Row 2
If you want a longer flap you can just repeat Row 2 until it is the length you desire.
Fasten off and weave in all the ends.
Construction:
Lay the rectangle flat with the right side facing down and the white lace flap at the top. I haven’t woven in the ends yet.
Fold the bottom of the pink body of the bag up to meet the top of Row 22.
I chose to single crochet the sides together from the outside as it made an attractive trim and a firm side to the clutch purse.
You can whip stitch the sides together if you prefer. This stitching will be done with the right sides together. To do this lay the bag with the right side facing up. Fold the bottom up to Row 22 as described above. Whip stitch the sides together. Next you will turn the bag right side out so the whip stitching is inside.
Weave in all the ends.
This is what it looks like from the back.
You are now the owner of a trendy and elegant Iris Clutch purse. I hope the find it not only a beautiful accessory to add to your collection, but a useful one.
