Description:

The Everyday Market Bag is created in the round and worked from the bottom up. The base is made as a circle and then you continue up to make the sides by creating a net effect. Finally the top rows serve to reinforce the spaces where the handle ties are placed.

These Everyday Market Bags  have been a best seller on my market stalls. They make fantastic gifts and make up so quickly.

Don’t forget to pin it for later so you don’t lose it.

The great thing about this design is that you can make it as tall as you like, and so customize it to meet your needs.

I love to add some tassels or pom poms to the ties for extra pizzazz. You can learn how to make pompoms in my Cosy Chic Tea Cozy blog post.

Design Inspiration

The inspiration for my free Everyday Market Bag crochet pattern came from a real life experience. Every summer I have a market stall at the Mayne Island Farmer’s Market and I often had people coming to my stall with their hands full of produce and bunches of flowers. I wanted to come up with a market bag that would meet their needs. Something that would carry and lot of produce etc, but not be cumbersome to bring with them to the market.

I also wanted something I could make quickly so I would be able to sell it at a reasonable price point that would be attractive to market goers.

I arrived at this design for the Everyday Market Bag after several trial and error attempts and I hope you find it easy to make and something that will be useful to you as you visit your local market of grocery store. If you are someone who sells items online or at your own craft sales, I hope you find it is a good seller. I have had so many happy customers purchase this that I had to share the free pattern here.

All About the Yarn.

For this pattern I decided to use Red Heart Super Saver yarn as it comes in so many vibrant and fun colours and also it is a very strong acrylic yarn that will hold up well to the weight that a full bag will have to carry. Red Heart Super Save yarn is so versatile and can be used in so many different types of projects. I use it for some of my Dreamer Beanies and also for my Black and White Striped Cushion pattern. It is also great for Cozies for your Tea Pots, Mason Jars or even your mugs.

When deciding which yarn to use for my Everyday Market Bag I decided on Red Heart Super Saver as it meets two of my top needs. It is strong and serviceable and it comes in all the great Red Heart colours that we all love.

Colourways:

Red Heart Super Saver yarn comes in 149 different colourways. 149!!! It comes in solid, prints and multis, flecks and heathers, and striped colours. You don’t even have to worry about matching dye lots as the colours never deviate. It is such a user friendly yarn.

This is a medium weight worsted weight yarn with a number 4 on the label.

The solid colour skeins are 7 oz (198 grams) and approximately 364 yards (333 metres). If you get the striped colours then they run smaller weighing 5 oz (14 grams) and 236 yards approx, or 215 metres

Care instructions for Red Heart Super Saver.

Another big plus for Red Heart Super Save yarn is that it is so easy to care for.You can wash and dry it in your machines. It is suggested you wash it in warm water and tumble dry. Do not bleach or iron your project. s

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: One skein of worsted weight  (4) yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver. You can also use  any worsted weight yarn.

Hook: You need two hooks for this project. J /10=5.75mm and  N/15 – 10mm.

I have used the N hook that is 9mm. It is confusing how these hooks are sized, but I have used both with success on this project.

Notions: Scissors , tapestry needle.

Gauge: not important with this project

Level: Easy

Special Stitches Used:

BLO DC or the Back loop only Double Crochet Stitch. To work this stitch you yarn over and then insert your hook into the back loop of the next stitch and continue to complete the DC.

DC2TOG (double crochet 2 together) is an easy decreasing stitch that is used in this pattern.
Basically, it takes 2 stitches and combines them into 1

With the dc2tog, you’ll start a double crochet as normal, but only complete half of it. Then you’ll complete a double crochet in the next stitch. Here’s a step-by-step guide.

1. Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch and pull up a loop. (three loops on hook)

2. Yarn over, pull through two loops. (two loops on hook)

3. Yarn over, insert hook into next stitch, pull up a loop. (four loops on hook)

4. Yarn over, pull through two loops. (three loops on hook)

5. Yarn over, pull through remaining three loops.

Your double crochet decrease is complete

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sl st=slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • blodc = back loop only double crochet

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

This pattern is written in the round. You do not turn your work at the end of each round.

After the base has been made you will begin to work in a spiral until you reach the length asked for in the pattern. You may also customize the length to meet your personal needs.

With a J Hook

Chain 4 and join to make a small ring.

Round 1: Ch 2 and make 11 DC in the ring, join to top of ch2 with a sl st, (11 DC)
Round 2: Ch2, 2 DC in each stitch around, join to top of ch2, (22 DC)
Round 3: Ch 2, (2 DC in first st, DC in next st), repeat around, join to top of ch2, (33 DC)

Round 4: Ch 2, (2 DC in first st, DC in next 2 stitches), repeat around, join to top of ch2, (44 DC)

Round 5: Ch 2, (2 DC in first st, DC in next 3 stitches), repeat around, join to top of ch2, (55 DC)
Round 6: Ch 2, (2 DC in first, DC in next 4), repeat around, join to top of ch2, (66 DC)

Change to an N Hook.

Round 7: Ch 2, BLO DC in each stitch around (66 st) (See special stitch instructions above)

These pictures show both left and right handed images showing where to insert the hook when doing the back loop only double crochet stitch.

Round 8: Ch 2, *work one DC in each of the next 4 stitches, DC two together, (this is a decrease, see the stitch instructions above) *  Repeat between * and * around and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st. (55 DC )

Begin the mesh.

Round 9: Ch 3 (acts as a DC and a Ch1), sk 2 st, DC in next st, ch1, sk1 st, DC in next st, ch1, sk1 st, dc in next st, repeat around and joint to the top of the ch2 with a sl st

Now we begin the spiral for the body of the bag.

Round 10: ch 1, DC in ch1 sp, ch1, DC in next ch1 sp, continue in this pattern until you have 14 rows of the mesh.

The top of the bag.

Round 1 : Ch 2, *DC in next ch1 sp, DC into top of previous DC*  Repeat this pattern around to the end and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st.

Round 2: DC in each stitch around and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st.

Round 3: DC in each stitch around and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Handle Ties.

With your J hook chain 200. Single crochet back along the chain and fasten off. There will be the beginning tail and the piece of yarn you ended with. Tie these together in a knot.

Thread the tie through the DC stitches in the middle row of the final three dc rows. Tie the two ends together. Lay the bag down and find the point on the side opposite to where the ties emerge. Pull the handle through so you have now got two handle to put over your shoulder. You can pull the top of the bag open and also cinch it shut with these handle ties.

Add pom poms or tassels for extra fun and flair.
