Design Inspiration for The Simple Square Halter Top Pattern
The Simple Square Halter Top is inspired by the halter tops of the sixties and seventies.
You know I love retro style designs and while searching for inspiration for my next crochet design on pinterest I found a picture of sleek diamond shaped halter top made in rayon fabric. I thought I could crochet a square to make it work and I am so happy I managed to create this stylish top for you to make. You can make it with your choice of worsted weight yarn, either acrylic or cotton, just look for the number (4) on the yarn label.
I wanted this to be a beginner friendly pattern that had beginner stitches but it needed to make a solid square for dramatic effect.
I used Knit Picks Brava worsted weight (4) yarn from We Crochet for mine. The green in the picture is Avocado. You can substitute any worsted weight yarn if you like.

Instructions:
The Simple Square Pattern
I have a video tutorial for making the solid square on my Carroway Crochet YouTube Channel.
Here are the written instructions for the square.
Notes:
In this square there is always one treble that marks each corner.
Starting in Round 2 there will be a cluster of 2dc, 1tr and 2dc made into the top of the tr from the previous round. This forms the corner and causes each row to grow by 4 stitches. (2 from each corner)
Square Instructions:
Ch4 and ss to 1st ch to make a loop.
Round 1: ch3 (this acts as your first treble), *3dc into the loop, 1tr into loop.* Repeat between * and * twice more, Then 3 dc into the loop, ss into 3rd chain of beginning ch3
Round 2: ch3, 2dc in same st, *1dc in each of the next 3 st, (2dc, 1tr, 2dc) into the previous tr.* Repeat between * and * twice more, 1dc in each of the next 3 st, 2dc in the beginning of the corner sp, (the base of the beginning ch3), ss into 3rd chain of the beginning ch3.
All subsequent Rounds are made as Round 2. You will be increasing by 4 dc on each side of the square.
Round 3: ch3, 2dc in same st, *1dc in each of the next 7 st, (2dc, 1tr, 2dc) in the previous tr.* Repeat between * and * twice more, 1dc in each of the next 7 st, 2dc in the beginning of the corner sp, (the base of the beginning ch3), ss into 3rd chain of the beginning ch3.
Round 4: ch3, 2dc in same st, *1dc in each of the next 11 st, (2dc, 1tr, 2dc) in the previous tr.* Repeat between * and * twice more, 1dc in each of the next 11 st, 2dc in the beginning of the corner sp, (the base of the beginning ch3), ss into 3rd chain of the beginning ch3.
Round 5: ch3, 2dc in same st, *1dc in each of the next 15 st, (2dc, 1tr, 2dc) in the previous tr.* Repeat between * and * twice more, 1dc in each of the next 15 st, 2dc in the beginning of the corner sp, (the base of the beginning ch3), ss into 3rd chain of the beginning ch3.
Keep working your square increasing in this way until the width of your square is 11.5” (13”, 14.5”, 16”, 17.5”, 19”, 20.5”, 22”, 23”
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
You are welcome to block your square if you would like to. The tops seen in these photos have not been blocked.
Halter Straps/Ties:
Join yarn between the second and third dc from the top corner of your halter top. Chain 160 for an approximately 43” tie.
If you prefer a shorter tie you can make a shorter chain.
You can sc back down the chain if you want a thicker tie.
Do the same to the other side of the corner, between the second and third dc down from the corner.
The ties should look like this.
The right tie is taken behind the neck and crossed over and threaded into the corner on the left side and brought back to the centre.
The left tie is taken behind the neck and crossed over and threaded into the corner on the right side and brought back to the centre.
Tie them securely in the middle of your back.
