Description of the Summer Velvet Scrunchie:

The Summer Velvet Scrunchie is created in the round and worked around a circular hair tie.  It uses the single crochet, the half double crochet, and if you want a super scrunchie, then you can use the double crochet stitch.
These scrunchies have become a best seller on my market stalls. They make fantastic gifts and make up so quickly.

Design Inspiration for my Summer Velvet Scrunchie.

While staying at my daughters, my teenage granddaughter started talking about scrunchies. There seemed to be a lot of scrunchies showing up on social media so I decided to play around and come up with a simple  crochet pattern to make scrunchies using the Bernat Baby Velvet yarn. Every summer I have a market stall at the Mayne Island Farmer’s Market and I love to introduce something new every year. I like to make something that specifically caters to the kids who come to the market with their parents. Something I can sell at a price they can afford. Scrunchies were my new item this year, along with freezie cozies. But that is another story.
These scrunchies are wonderful to make on an evening in front of your favourite movie. I love the simplicity, and you can make them super luxurious with the little tweak I mention at the end of the pattern.

I happen to have a great little video to talk you through the process.

All About the Yarn.

For this pattern I decided to use Bernat Baby Velvet yarn as it comes in so many soft and fun colours.  It is just perfect for making scrunchies in the modern style and so gentle on the hair. These scrunchies also make great bracelets for your wrist.
Bernat Baby Velvet yarn  is a medium weight worsted weight yarn with a number 4 on the label. Bernat Baby Velvet Yarn is a luxuriously soft worsted weight yarn that is perfect for nursery projects. Its velvet texture doesn’t pill or shed, creating machine washable and dryable baby projects that are a joy to stitch. From blankets to booties, you can get creative with knit and crochet patterns using this yarn.

Care instructions for Red Heart Super Saver.

Another big plus for Bernat Baby Velvet yarn is that it is so easy to care for. You can wash and dry it in your machines.

Introducing the Summer Velvet Scrunchie.  The softest scrunchies ever.
I hope you enjoy making them as much as I do.

I wanted to make these popular scrunchies as a simple pattern for beginners.
You can make these super trendy velvet scrunchies with beginner crochet stitches. Scrunchies were popular back  in the nineties and they have made a huge comeback right now.

 Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Bernat Baby Velvet Yarn (4).  This yarn is super soft and squishy as it is 100% polyester. I used Hopping Hydrangea, such a pretty colour.
Hook: size, H -5.00 mm.
Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.
Gauge: not important for this pattern

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
US
double crochet (dc)
half double crochet (hdc)
Single crochet (sc)
UK
Treble (tr)
Half Treble Crochet (htr)
Double crochet (dc)

Instructions:

Note: For the first round you will be working around the hair tie as you go, this will mean you will insert your hook through the hair tie, instead of into a stitch.
Create a slip knot, and work through the hair tie and join with a sl st, Make sure your yarn is at the back of your work. Join with a sl st
Round 1: ch 1, work sc stitches all around the hair tie until you cannot see any of the tie showing through the crochet stitches. Join to the top of the ch 1 with a sl st.
Round 2: Ch1, make 2 hdc into each stitch around, join to top of first hdc with a sl st.
Finish off and weave in the ends. When working with velvet yarn it is a good idea to leave an extra long tail to weave in so it does not work loose.

To make a luxury scrunchie, use dc stitches for row 2 instead of hdc.

Congratulations.  You now have a beautiful velvet scrunchie.

  1. Here in New Mexico, if a young girl ” likes” a boy, she gives him the scrunchie from her hair. boy’s Moms are complaining about all the scrunchies in the laundry. Of course the girls’ Mom’s are complaining about the continual shortage of scrunchies.
