Description of the Easy Christmas Beanie Free Pattern.
The Easy Christmas Beanie Free Crochet Pattern is a sideways construction beanie. You start with a chain as tall as you want the beanie to be and work your rows until it is long enough to go around your head. The body of the beanie is made up of half double crochet stitches stitches worked into the back loop only, so it has this great cozy texture. In this pattern there it enough length for a large folded up brim
Don’t forget to pin it for later so you don’t lose it.

The Easy Christmas Beanie
Pattern by Pam Carr ©2025
Introducing the The Easy Christmas Beanie which is made with worsted weight (4) yarn and the half double crochet stitch. By using the back loop only half double crochet you create the ribbed beanie you see in these pictures.
This beanie is made flat and then joined at the side seam.
I would love to see lots of your Beanies in different colours once they are done. I have chosen red and white for my stripes.
Supplies you will need:
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (4)
To make this striped Christmas Beanie I used the colours White and Red You may use other worsted weight yarn (4) yarn but the beanie’s size may vary. This is a great project for using up your worsted weight (4) yarn stash.
Hook: Size H/8– 5.00mm
Notions:
A Pom Pom Maker for the yarn pom pom or a faux fur pom pom
Scissors, Tapestry needle.
Gauge: 14 hdc – 8 hdc rows = 4” (10 cm) with an H – 5.00mm mm, hook
(Feel free to go up or down a hook size to get the correct gauge.)
Abbreviations (uses US conventions)
-
Ch = chain
-
st = stitch
-
sl st = slip stitch
-
Blo = back loop only
-
hdc blo = half double crochet back loop only
Special Stitches for this Pattern.
Back Loop Only BLO
This beanie is made using the half double crochet back loop only stitch, (hdc blo)
When you see blo after hdc it is to indicate that you do the specified stitch into the back loop only of the previous stitch. I have a video on how to find the back loop on my youtube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQhzE70Ov-U&t=85s /
This pattern uses US terminology.
The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
USHalf double crochet (hdc) |
UKHalf Treble Crochet (htr) |
Size:
Adult Large: 22-23”
Finished Size (laid flat): 11″ wide and 13″ tall
When you roll up the brim it is 11” wide and 10” tall approximately
Note:
To make a smaller beanie do less rows and to make your beanie larger just add rows.
Do not count the turning ch as a stitch.
I change colours every two rows as this allows you to carry the colours across the top and creates less ends to weave in at the end. You can change colours every row if that is the look you want, but you will have lots of ends to weave in at the end.
Instructions:
Start with red
Ch 51.
Row 1: hdc into the 2nd ch from the hook, hdc across the row, turn work (50 stitches)
Row 2: ch1, hdc blo into the first stitch and into each st across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to white. Rows 3-4: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 5-6: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to white.
Rows 7-8: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 9-10: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to white.
Rows 11-12: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 13-14: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to white.
Rows 15-16: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 17-18: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (50 stitches)
Continue as above making two rows of each colour to continue the stripe patten until you get to 48 rows.
After 48 rows you will end on the bottom of the beanie.
Do not fasten off as you will be joining the side seam.
Fold in half lengthways and seam together using a slst. You can also use a whip stitch and sew up the side seam with a needle if you prefer.
Gather the top.
Using a strand of yarn at least 10” long and a yarn needle, gather up the stitches along the top of the beanie and pull tight. Work back and forwards to secure the top of the beanie. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Turn the beanie right side out and fold up the brim.
Make a yarn pom pom and attach to the top of your beanie or use a faux fur pom pom.
If you need help making a pompom here is a great tutorial for you.
I hope you enjoy your Easy Christmas Beanie.
