Preemie Beanie Crochet Pattern

How to Crochet a Preemie Beanie

This Preemie Beanie crochet pattern is sure to melt your heart. It is so adorable. Made with a light weight (3)  yarn theses beanies are the perfect shower gift to make for someone special who has a new baby. I have called it the Zoe Preemie Beanie after my nieces new baby.
I was asked to design something special for this years Preemie Crochet Challenge hosted by Helen over at Sunflower Cottage Crochet. This is the third year of this wonderful challenge. Head on over to her blog post to get all the info on why it is such an important cause to Helen and also you can see all the fabulous baby designs with Preemies in mind. So this beanie pattern was my offering in this challenge. I hope you like it.

I fell in love with these teeny tiny Preemie Baby Beanies when I first started making them. Make sure you spend some time when choosing your yarn for this pattern. You will need a lightweight (3) yarn in North America, or a DK yarn in the UK.
When choosing your yarn, make sure to choose something that you know can withstand being machine washed and dried multiple times, because it most likely will be. Also, you’ll want something that won’t irritate babies skin, so either an acrylic, or nylon blend, or any of these in combination with cotton. No wool, and I do not suggest a 100% cotton as these tend to grow a lot, and don’t have any other fibre to help it bounce back.
Spring can also make us think of yellow, but hospitals do not like to put yellow hats on babies because it can make them appear jaundiced.
When you are using your preemie beanie crochet pattern, you can always turn it into a stash busting project and do a colour block if you like, or even create some stripes. I love getting creative with crochet projects.

Description of The Preemie Beanie crochet pattern.

This beanie is a fitted hat and crocheted with lightweight (3) yarn using the double crochet stitch for the body and for the brim you will do Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet. This gives a ribbed effect around the bottom so the hat fits snugly.
It is made using a top down method, so you can make it longer if you want to.  It really is a beginner friendly pattern and I would describe the skill level as Easy.

Special Stitches used in the brim of the Zoe Preemie Beanie pattern.

For the brim you will do Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet. This gives a ribbed effect.
Here is a great video tutorial to learn this technique.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5S2D25Aa5oA
FPDC or front post double crochet.
Yarn over, insert hook from the front side of the work to back and then to front again, around the post of the indicated stitch on the previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops, (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops, (1 loop on hook).

BPDC or back post double crochet.
Yarn over, insert hook from the back side of the work to front and to back again around the post of the indicated stitch on the previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops (1 loop on hook)
A tip to remember when working the ribbed brim.
When you work 1 front post double crochet (FPDC) around the post of the double crochet in the row below, this stitch is raised on the surface of the fabric facing you. Always make sure that the post stitches are raised to the same side in each successive row or round. Keep an eye on the ribs and remember: If the stitch you’re working is raised to the front, work a front post stitch; if the stitch is raised to the back, work a back post stitch.

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
US
double crochet (dc)
half double crochet (hdc)
UK
Treble (tr)
Half treble crochet (htrc)
