Things you will need before starting your Crochet Dishcloth Project

• A pattern: There is the free crochet washcloth pattern here on my blog. Just scroll further down on my blog post to find it

• Yarn: I recommend you use a cotton or mostly cotton blend yarn. You will need a worsted weight (4) yarn, commonly referred to as Aran in the UK.

• A Crochet Hook. You will need an H/5mm crochet hook for this crochet washcloth.

• You’ll also need scissors and a tapestry or yarn  needle

What skill level will I need for this Free Crochet Wash Cloth Pattern?

This pattern is pretty beginner friendly.  As long as you have some basic crochet skills, you will be able to make these bean stitch crochet washcloths. The technique that may be new to you it that you are pulling through the yarn to have multiple loops on your hook before pulling the yarn through to create the bean stitch. The video tutorials linked above with demonstrate this technique easily for you.

The Bean Stitch Washcloth Pattern

Introducing the “ Bean Stitch Dishcloth” Pattern.

The Bean Stitch Dishcloth is a beginner friendly pattern and is a great project for practicing the Bean Stitch, with ‘easy to follow’ instructions. I also have video tutorials for left and right-handed crocheters on my YouTube Channel.  There is a link below.

Dishcloths, that can also be used as washcloths, are such a fun and easy project to make for your home. They also make great gifts for Christmas, birthdays or as a housewarming gift.

The Bean Stitch Dishcloth

 

 

Size: 8”x 8” approximately.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Category (4) Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn in any color of your choosing. I used Bernat Handicraft Cotton yarn, (100% cotton).

Hook:  H-5.00mm

Notions: Yarn Needle, Scissors.

Gauge:  6 bean stitch clusters x 10 bean stitch rows = 4” x 4” square 

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

• Ch = chain

• st = stitch

• St(s) – stitch(es)

• YO – yarn over

• Sk – skip

• Ch – chain

• Sc – single crochet

• * –* – repeat instructions between asterisks

 

Special Stitch for this Dishcloth:

The Bean Stitch.

How to make the Classic Bean Stitch. 

Made with a foundation chain of multiples of 2 plus 1

Row 1: Insert your hook into the 3rd ch from the hook, YO, draw up a loop. YO, insert your hook in the same ch st, YO and draw up a loop. YO, insert hook into the same ch st, YO, draw up a loop. YO, draw through all 6 loops on your hook, Ch1 to finish off your first bean st, *sk 1 ch, insert your hook into the next ch, YO, draw up a loop. YO, insert your hook in the same ch st, YO and draw up a loop. YO, insert hook into the same ch st, YO, draw up a loop. YO, draw through all 6 loops on your hook, ch1 to finish the bean stitch*.  Repeat between * to * to the end.

Row 2: Ch1, Skip over the last bean st of the previous row, * insert your hook into the next st and draw up a loop. YO, insert your hook in the same st, YO and draw up a loop, YO, insert hook into the same st YO, draw up a loop. YO, draw through all 6 loops on your hook. Ch1 to finish off the bean st, skip over the previous bean st* Repeat between * and *.

Repeat Row 2 to continue the bean stitch pattern.

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US Single crochet (sc)

UK Double crochet (dc)

Instructions for the Bean Stitch Dishcloth.

Made with a foundation chain of multiples of 2 plus 1, keep this in mind of you want to make a larger or smaller cloth

Chain 23.

Row 1: Insert your hook into the 3rd ch from the hook, YO, draw up a loop. YO, insert your hook in the same ch st, YO and draw up a loop. YO, insert hook into the same ch st, YO, draw up a loop. YO, draw through all 6 loops on your hook, Ch1 to finish off your first bean st, *sk 1 ch, insert your hook into the next ch, YO, draw up a loop. YO, insert your hook in the same ch st, YO and draw up a loop. YO, insert hook into the same ch st, YO, draw up a loop. YO, draw through all 6 loops on your hook, ch1 to finish the bean stitch*.  Repeat between * to * to the end.

Row 2: Ch1, Skip over the last bean st of the previous row, * insert your hook into the next st and draw up a loop. YO, insert your hook in the same st, YO and draw up a loop. YO, insert hook into the same st YO, draw up a loop. YO, draw through all 6 loops on your hook. Ch1 to finish off the bean st, skip over the previous bean st* and repeat between * and * to the end, finishing with a bean stitch into the final loop of the previous bean st. 

Rows 3-21: Repeat Row 2 to continue the Bean Stitch.

Finish off and weave in the ends.
