Things you will need before starting your Crochet Washcloth Project

Yarn: I recommend you use a cotton or mostly cotton blend yarn. You will need a worsted weight (4) yarn, commonly referred to as Aran in the UK.

What skill level will I need for this Free Crochet Wash Cloth Pattern?
This pattern is pretty beginner friendly. As long as you have some basic crochet skills, you will be able to make these crochet washcloths. The single crochet stitch used in this pattern is the first crochet stitch you will learn. The Moss Stitch Washcloth Pattern
Introducing the “ Moss Stitch Washcloth” Pattern.
The Moss Stich Wash Cloth is a beginner friendly pattern and is a great project for practicing the Single Crochet Stitch, with ‘easy to follow’ instructions. It uses the single crochet stitches and chain 1 to create this lovely textured stitch.
Washcloths, that can also be used as dishcloths, are such a fun and easy project to make for your home. They also make great gifts for Christmas, birthdays or as a housewarming gift.

The Moss Stitch Washcloth
Size: 8”x 8” approximately.
Supplies you will need:
Yarn: Category (4) Worsted Weight Yarn in any color of your choosing. I used Bernat Handicraft Cotton yarn, (100% cotton) in the colour Soft Grey.
Hook: H-5.00mm
Notions: Yarn Needle, Scissors.
Gauge: 13 sc x 14 sc rows = 4” x 4” square
Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

Ch = chain
-
st = stitch
-
St(s) – stitch(es)
-
Sp – space
-
Sk – skip
-
Ch – chain
-
Sc – single crochet
-
* –* – repeat instructions between asterisk
Special Stitch for this Washcloth:
The Moss Stitch.
The moss stitch is made with a combination of the single crochet and chain stitch) to create simple texture
How to make the Classic Moss Stitch.
Note: the chain 2 at the beginning of each row counts as one moss stitch (sc and ch1).
Chain an even number of chain stitches.
Row 1: sc in 4th ch from hook, *ch1, skip 1ch, sc in next ch*, repeat between * and * to the end. The last stitch should be a sc. Turn work.
Row 2: ch2, sc in 1st ch1 space, *ch1, skip 1 stitch, sc in next ch1 space* repeat between * and * to the end . The last stitch should be a sc in the ch3 sp at the start of Row 1. Turn work.
Row 3: ch2, sc in 1st ch1 space, *ch1, skip 1 stitch, sc in next ch1 space* – repeat between * and * to the end . The last stitch should be a sc in the ch2 sp at the start of Row 2. Turn work.
Repeat Row 3 to continue the moss stitch.

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

Instructions for the Moss Stitch Washcloth.
Chain 34
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch1, skip 1ch, sc in next ch*, repeat between * and * to the end. The last stitch should be a sc. Turn work.
Row 2: ch2, sc in 1st ch1 space, *ch1, skip 1 stitch, sc in next ch1 space* repeat between * and * to the end. The last stitch should be a sc in the ch2 sp at the start of Row 1. Turn work. (17sc and 17ch1 spaces)
Row 3: ch2, sc in 1st ch1 space, *ch1, skip 1 stitch, sc in next ch1 space* repeat between * and * to the end. The last stitch should be a sc in the ch2 sp at the start of Row 2. Turn work. (17sc and 17ch1 spaces)
Repeat Row 3 to continue the moss stitch.
Row 4-30: Repeat Row 3.
Finish off and weave in the ends.
