How to Single Crochet

How to Single Crochet.

Welcome to my beginner step by step tutorial for how to single crochet.

How to single crochet

If you are just getting started with crocheting, this is one of the first stitches you will learn. Learning how to  single crochet stitch is relatively easy one to master and is also one of the basic crochet stitches that are the building blocks of most crochet projects you will make. Other basic stitches are the half double crochet and the double crochet.

Note: This single crochet stitch tutorial is using US terms. In crochet the US and UK use different names for the same stitches and this can be confusing. Always make sure to check which crochet terminology the patterns you are working with are written in.

Crochet Abbreviations.

When you begin to work with patterns you will notice that there are abbreviations for each of the stitches used in the pattern. For the single crochet the abbreviation used is SC or sc.
Here are the common crochet abbreviations that you will see used when describing how to make crochet stitches.
  • st = stitch
  • yo = yarn over (when yarn goes over the crochet hook)
  • sc = single crochet
  • rep = repeat

What is single crochet?

The single crochet (sc) is a basic crochet stitch which is the shortest of all the stitches. Crochet stitches vary in length according to how the stitch is made.  When you compare the single crochet to a half double crochet or a double crochet, it is smaller due to the way the stitch is made.
The single crochet stitch is commonly the first stitch you learn to make once you have mastered the slip knot and how to make a chain.
The single crochet stitch can be used to create a crochet fabric and it is quite a dense fabric with few holes so it is perfect for items that are firm and stable.

Note: The photos for this step by step how to single crochet tutorial are for right-handed crocheters. I also have a video teaching you the steps to successfully single crochet with confidence.

If you’re left-handed, I have a Beginner Friendly single crochet video tutorial for you.

Supplies You Need to Start Learning How to Single Crochet Stitch.

When your first decide to start learning the single crochet stitch it’s a good idea to start with a mid-size hook and yarn.
I would recommend you get an   H/8 (5.0mm) crochet hook and some worsted weight yarn. You can get either acrylic, wool, or cotton yarn for when you first start learning.
To find a worsted weight (4) yarn in the shop you need to look at the label on the skein and look for the number (4). This label will also have information on what hook size you should use with the yarn being sold.
If you choose to start with a chunkier yarn you can find out which hook you will need by checking the label on the yarn you select.
