Inspiration for The Granny Stripe Skirt Pattern

The inspiration for my Granny Stripe Skirt pattern was all the great hippy inspired fashion crochet I saw out there.  I wanted to create a super easy and fun summer skirt that looks great worn with leggings or at a festival but can also double as a beach cover up
I wanted this to be a beginner friendly pattern that also had a great texture and added style by ausing the familiar granny stripe stitch. I wanted to create a boho style skirt as people are loving boho style right now. So this skirt kind of captures that vibe and looks great on everyone.

For this pattern you may decide to use Red Heart Super Saver yarn as it comes in so many vibrant and fun colours.
Red Heart Super Save yarn is so versatile and can be used in so many different types of projects. I use it for some of my Dreamer Beanies and also for my Rainbow Fringe Bralette pattern. It is also great for Cozies for your Tea Pots, Mason Jars or even your mugs.

Clourways:

Red Heart Super Saver yarn comes in 149 different colourways. 149!!! It comes in solid, prints and multis, flecks and heathers, and striped colours. You don’t even have to worry about matching dye lots as the colours never deviate. It is such a user friendly yarn.
Red Heart Super Save is a medium weight worsted weight yarn with a number 4 on the label.
The solid colour skeins are 7 oz (198 grams) and approximately 364 yards (333 metres). If you get the striped colours then they run smaller weighing 5 oz (14 grams) and 236 yards approx, or 215 metres

Care instructions for Red Heart Super Saver.

Another big plus for Red Heart Super Save yarn is that it is so easy to care for.You can wash and dry it in your machines. It is suggested you wash it in warm water and tumble dry. Do not bleach or iron your project. s

Special Stitch for this Pattern

The Granny Stripe Stitch (worked flat).
This is how you make the granny stripe stitch when working flat. There are some differences when working it is the round and these are explained in the skirt pattern instructions.
Make a chain of multiples of 3.
Row 1: ch 3, (this acts as 1st dc), make one more dc into the same st,  *Skip 2 stitches, then work 3dcs into the next stitch*, (this is called a shell). Repeat between * and * until there are two stitches left, sk1 st, work 2 dc into the last st.
You should have a row that begins and ends with 2dc’s. on either side of all your shells.
For the next row you will be working into the spaces between the 3dc shells of the previous row.
Row 2: Chain 3, then work 3dc stitches (a shell) into the first sp between the 2dcs at the end of the previous row and the next 3 dc shell.  Work a 3dc shell into each space across.  At the end of the row, work 1 dc into the top of the ch3 made at start of previous row. Turn work.
Row 3:   Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as the ch 3, work a 3 dc shell into each space to the end of the row, work 2 dc into the top of the turning chain from the previous row. Turn.
Rows 2 and 3 are repeated to make the traditional granny stripe stitch when working flat.

Instructions:

Note:

This skirt is worked in the round so that you will not be turning the work and there is no seam to sew.

A shell is created when you do 3dc into one space or st.

(You can also just make a chain that fits around your hips making sure it is in multiples of 3. Join with a sl st to the first chain to form a ring.  Be careful not to twist your chain. This way it is customized to your body.)

Round 4: Ch3, 2dc into same sp, make 3 dc into the sp between the previous shells.  Work a 3 dc shell into each space around.  At the end of the row sl st into the top of the ch3.
Change colour. To change colours attach the new colour in the sp between 2 shells.
Round 5: Ch3, 2dc into same sp, make 3 dc into the space between the previous shells.  Work a 3 dc shell into each space around.  At the end of the row sl st into the top of the ch3.
Round 6: Ch3, 2dc into same sp, make 3 dc into the sp between the previous shells.  Work a 3 dc shell into each space around.  At the end of the row, sl st into the top of the ch3 made at start of previous row.
Repeat Rounds 5 and 6, changing colour as desired.
Make as many rounds as you need for the desired length of your skirt
