A beginner-friendly crochet mason jar cozy for you.  My Heart Mason Jar Cozy is a free pattern here on my blog.  Adding the heart applique to this cozy was inspired by Valentine’s Day, but love is a year round thing, so it is perfect for each and every day.  You can scroll down for the video tutorials that are also available here. The Heart Mason Jar Cozy Pattern with an Applique Heart.

Thinking of Valentine’s Day projects I could share here on my blog, I came up with a few cute and useful cozy ideas. Hearts symbolize love and I like the fact that you can make one of these cozies for a Valentine’s Day project or gift, but it also works for the whole year round. It isn’t just for Valentine’s Day.
You can see how to make the mug cozy here. It is another one of my favourite quick and easy crochet projects. I love trying out all the colour options. The mason jar cozy is made first and then you make the small heart applique to sew on later.

I am so happy to introduce my “Heart Mason Jar Cozy” free crochet pattern. This cozy is a super simple design and is embellished with a crochet heart, the symbol of love, and perfect for Valentine’s as well as all year round. Keep your coffee or tea hot and your hands warm with this cute mason jar cozy.
The Heart Mason Jar Cozy is made with the simple double crochet and single crochet stitch so it is beginner friendly. There are so many colour combinations that give it a different feel and vibe. Make it is a hot pink or red with a white heart, or for a softer feel use gentle pinks and snowy white. Mason Jar cozies are a great gift and they are so quick and easy to make. And they are so popular right now, as beverage holders, as storage containers for pens and markers. They even work for keeping your crochet hooks handy.
Another popular use for mason jars covered with a cozy is for holding a tea light. They are beautiful as the light filters through the windows created by the crochet stitches.

Heart Mason Jar Cozy

This Cozy is A Beginner Friendly Pattern

The free Heart Mason Jar Cozy crochet pattern is so beginner friendly, but it is also a fun make for those more experienced with crochet. For those new to crochet, there are many videos on YouTube that will demonstrate the single crochet and double crochet stitches. I have created  video tutorials for single crochet and double crochet on my youtube channel.  They are make specifically for beginners, so they go nice and slow and explain things in detail. I hope you find them helpful.
This mason jar cozy is made to fit short so there is an exposed area of glass at the top. This means you can comfortably drink from it without getting the top of the cozy wet.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Less than one skein of Worsted weight (4) in your main colour for the cozy.
You will need a small amount of worsted weight (4) yarn in the contrasting colour for the little heart.
The yarn used in the cozies pictured in my blog are Red Heart Super Saver yarn and Caron’s Simply Soft yarn.
Hook: size 5 mm, US – H/8
Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.
Gauge: 13 dc – 7 dc rows = 4” (10 cm)

 Size:

This pattern was designed for the 500-ml, Wide-Mouth Mason Jar. You can substitute mason jar brands as long as the jar measures 5″- 5.5 “ tall and 12″ around. The finished mason jar cozy will measure approximately 6″ tall when laid flat, and 10″ around. This is so it will stretch and fit snugly when fitted on the mason jar.

Abbreviations (uses US terms)

  • Ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet

The Mini Heart Applique

Instructions:

Using your contrasting yarn and your 5 mm hook make a magic circle. You can learn how to make a magic circle and this heart by watching my youtube tutorial on how to make a heart.
If you really do not want to begin your heart in this way you can ch 4 and join with a sl st to the beginning to make a mini circle to crochet into.
I find this sequence a challenge to follow when written out in a long sentence, so I have broken it up into steps.
Round 1:
Step 1: Chain 3, 3 hdc into the magic circle, (or your mini circle),
Step 2: 3 dc into the circle.
Step 3: ch 1, slip stitch into the circle, ch 1
Step 4: 3 dc into the circle.
Step 5: 3 hdc into the circle. Join to the top of the ch 3 with a slip stitch.
If you made a magic circle this is the time to pull the yarn and tighten it up.
Round 2
Step 1: Chain 3, 1 hdc into each of the next three stitches,
Step 2: 1 dc into the next stitch.
Step 3: 3 dc into the next stitch
Step 4: 2 dc into the next stitch.
Step 5: ch 2, slip stitch into the previous sl st below, ch 2
Step 6: 2 dc into the next stitch.
Step 7: 3 dc into the next stitch
Step 8: 1 dc into the next stitch.
Step 9: 1 hdc into each of the next three stitches, Join to the top of the ch 3 with a slip stitch.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Sewing the Heart Applique on your Mason Jar Cozy

Now is the time to attach the applique to the cozy. To attach the heart I counted down the top two single crochet rows and then the top double crochet row. I placed the top of the heart below this double crochet row.   (see the pictures above).  You can pin it into position and then use the tapestry needle and yarn that is the same colour as your heart to stitch it into place. I go up and down inside the outside stitches of the heart. Fasten off the yarn and weave in the ends.
Now you have a beautiful Valentine’s Heart Mason Jar Cozy. I hope you enjoyed making it as much as I did.
