Introducing this free crochet cowl pattern, The Cedar Cowl. This is a great cowl style scarf perfect for beginners.
This is a super cozy circle scarf made with Bernat Softee Chunky (6) super bulky yarn in dark green and it is perfect for fall and winter weather when you need protection from the cold.
You can make this Cedar Cowl with the Half Double Crochet Stitch, which is a beginner friendly stitch.
I wanted to make this a stylish ribbed design that was also a simple pattern for beginners. Often as a beginner to crochet it is hard to find a simple pattern that you can make up and have as an accessory you can wear with pride. This free crochet cowl pattern is one of those patterns. Using the large hook makes the airy stitches that make this scarf super cozy.

About the Yarn.
I made my first Cedar Cowl with super bulky weight yarn, (6) and I use Bernat Softee Chunky yarn.
Bernat Softee Chunky yarn is a super-bulky weight yarn thats perfect for knit and crochet garments, accessories, and home decor projects. It is available in a range of solid and multi-colored shades, from neutrals to brights, this yarn is ideal for many different patterns.
The bulky gauge works up quickly, with excellent stitch definition. Conveniently machine washable and dryable for easy care. This yarn is the go to yarn for makers as it is so quick to work up and makes the softest projects imaginable.
It also comes in a huge selections of gorgeous colours. I used the dark green for the ones in this picture.
Other Super Bulky/Bulky Yarns Work Tool
When I made my video tutorial for the Cedar Cowl I tried another (6) weight yarn, Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick and I really love the way this one turned out too.
The cool thing is that the Cedar Cowl made with either yarn is super warm and can be used as a snood too if you want to keep your head warmer. I love that is doubles as a snood and it is such an easy pattern to work up for a nice cozy cowl scarf.
Description of The Cedar Cowl.
This easy Cedar Cowl a beautiful ribbed cowl and it is made with the half double crochet stitch. It is made flat so you turn your work after each row.
The ribbed effect is created by working into the back loop only of the stitches. This is a great technique to create the ribbed texture. It is made flat and then joined together at the seam with the slip stitch.
Here is a close up of how the ribbing looks.

Special Stitch for the Pattern:
Back Loop Only BLO
This cowl is created using the half double crochet back loop only stitch. (hdcblo). This gives it the interesting soft ribbed texture.
When you see blo after hdc it is to indicate that you do the specified stitch into the back loop only of the previous stitch. I have a video on how to find the back loop when doing the single crochet on my youtube channel. You will use the same technique with the half double crochet.
Here is a close up of what the ribbed cowl looks like using the blo technique.
