Sedge Stitch Square

I was invited to design two squares for The Friendship Blanket CAL.

This is something that Helen from Sunflower Cottage Crochet dreamed up.

Why call it the Friendship Blanket?

Simply because it is created from designs by many designer friends! Every week Sunflower Cottage Crochet will release 3 squares for you to make. They will all measure 9″ (once finished and blocked if necessary) and in total there are 40 squares … yes, I did say 40! You only need 35 to make the afghan but we thought it was a good idea to include a few extras for those who

I am so excited to share my Sedge Stitch Square as a part of the Friendship Blanket CAL

Introducing the “Sedge Stitch Square” Pattern by Carroway Crochet.

The Sedge Stitch Square was created for the Friendship Blanket CAL by Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

It is a beginner friendly pattern and with easy to follow instructions. It uses the sedge stitch for the body of the square, and the single crochet stitch for the border.   I have clearly written instructions for the sedge stitch here, but there are also videos on youtube to help you learn the sedge stitch if needed.

You are also more than welcome to contact me with any questions you have about the instructions.

Special Stitch for this Pattern.

The Sedge Stitch.

Here are the written instructions for how to do the Sedge Stitch.

This stitch uses multiples of 3.

Row 1: HDC into the 2nd ch from the hook, make a DC into the same ch.  skip two chains and in the next ch make a SC, HDC, DC., *Skip two chains and make “SC, HDC, DC” into the next ch.* Repeat from*to * across to the end and there is one chain left. Do one SC and turn.

Row 2: Chain one (this counts as your first SC), HDC and DC into the top of the SC you just made of the row below. Skip over the DC and HDC, “SC, HDC, DC” into the SC. You’ll always be looking for the SC to do your “SC, HDC, DC” into. Repeat the pattern across ending the last stitch with one single crochet. (When you get to the end, you’ll have two stitches left, just skip one and SC into the last stitch).
