Description of  this Crochet Vest Free Pattern

The Carefree Vest is made up of three rectangles that are seamed down each side. You will use double crochet stitches to create the Carefree Vest.
It uses five colours throughout the vest, and the instructions clearly describe where to change colours.
The great thing about this design is that you can make it shorter or longer if you wish, you can customize it to meet your needs.

Design Inspiration for The Carefree Vest

The inspiration for my Carefree Vest crochet pattern was the beautiful colour blocks I’ve seen in other sweater and blanket designs.
I wanted this to be a beginner friendly pattern that had beginner stitches  with the added style of the dramatic blocks of colour.
I used Knit Picks Brava worsted weight (4) yarn  from We Crochet for mine. My testers used a variety of worsted weight yarns, (4) and they all worked out perfectly.

      Crochet Vest: Free Pattern

Introducing the Carefree Vest which is made with Knit Picks Worsted weight yarn from We Crochet.

It is made with the double crochet stitch. I would love to see lots of your spring vests in different colours once they are done.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Knit Picks Brava worsted weight yarn (4) from We Crochet.

The vest in the pictures uses the colours Grass, Alfalfa, Brindle, Hunter and Avocado.

You can use any worsted weight (4) yarn. With Knit Picks yarn from We Crochet you will need 10 skeins of Brava worsted weight yarn. ( 2 skeins of each of the 5 colours, Avocado, Alfalfa, Hunter, Grass and Brindle)

This is because this pattern uses five colours to create the colour blocks and we need 250 plus yards of each colour. There are 218 yards in each skein, so there well be lots left over from your second skein of each colour.

The total yardage required is 1200- 1800 yards if you are substituting yarn.

Hooks: Size K/ – 10.5  –  6.50mm,

Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle.

Gauge: 6 dc – 4.25 dc rows = 4” (10 cm) with a K 6.50mm, hook

(Feel free to go up or down a hook size to get the correct gauge.)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • dc = double crochet

This pattern uses US terminology.

The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

UK

Treble crochet (trc)

Instructions:

NOTES: This pattern is written  in 4 sizes and these are indicated by using brackets. XS/S ( M/L,  XL/2XL, 3XL-5X/)

This vest is made with 3 rectangular pieces which form the back and 2 front panels of the garment.

The Colour Blocks I used are included in the instructions. You will see where to change colour.  You may choose to apportion your colours differently according to your yarn choices. Just keep the number of rows the same for all three panels.

Do not count the turning ch as a stitch.

Back Panel.

If you are using five colours like I did you can assign each of your colours as A, B, C, D, E.

This makes it easy for you to substitute your own colours as you create your Carefree Vest.

Here are the colours alongside the  letters to identify them. You can make your own chart.

  1. Grass
  2. Alfalfa
  3. Brindle
  4. Avocado
  5. Hunter

Start with Colour C

Chain 62, (77, 85, 90)

Row 1: dc into third ch from the hook and dc across to the end,  Turn work 60. (75, 83, 88)

Row 2: Ch 2, dc into the first stitch and into every stitch across. Turn work.  60, (75, 83, 88)

Rows 3-17: Repeat Row 2. 60, (75, 83, 88)

Change to Colour A

Rows 18-27: Repeat Row 2. 60, (75, 83, 88)

Change to Colour B

Rows 28-39: Repeat Row 2. 60, (75, 83, 88)

Here is where we split the back colours.

We will be working with two colours across each row.

Here is a video showing how to change colours during a row.

https://youtu.be/yk3fTD8QbjY

Using Colours E and D

Row 40: Ch 2, With colour D, DC into the next 27, (35, 39, 42) stitches, change to Colour E, DC into next 33,(40, 44,46) stitches, Turn work. 60, (75, 83, 88)

Row 41: Ch 2, With colour E, DC into the next 33,(40, 44,46) stitches, change to Colour D, DC into next 27, (35, 39, 42)  stitches, Turn work. 60, (75, 83, 88)

Repeat these two rows until you get to the end of Row 46

Now we will change from Colour D to Colour A

Row 47: Ch 2, With colour E, DC into the next 33,(40, 44, 46) stitches, change to Colour A, DC into next 27, (35, 39, 42) stitches, Turn work. 60, (75, 83, 88)

Row 48: Ch 2, With colour A  DC  into the next 27, (35, 39, 42) stitches, change to Colour E, DC into next 33,(40, 44,46) stitches, Turn work. 60, (75, 83, 88)

Construction.

Sewing together the front and back panels.

Place the back panel with the right side facing up and lay the two front panels on top of it with the right side facing down. (right sides together).

Place stitch markers or tie with yarn at the side edges and where the front panels end at the neck.

Sew the shoulder seams with a whip st or sl st together. Be sure to do several stitches at the end of each section to ensure it doesn’t come undone with wear.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Side seams

Measure down 8.5” (9”, 10”, 11”) from the top on each side sweater and mark with stitch markers or a short piece of yarn.

Note: This measurement is a guide and you can adjust it to  fit you.

Use pins or stitch markers to join the back and front as you go down the side seams matching up the rows until you get to the bottom edge of the panels.

Using the whip stitch or your preferred method of sewing, start at the bottom and sew the back and the front panels together. Make sure you are matching the rows as you go.  Stop when you get to the stitch marker at the bottom of the arm hole.

Finish off and weave in the ends.

Do the same on the other side of the vest.

Finish off and weave in the ends.

Turn it right side out and voila, you have a Carefree Vest.
