Hi everyone. I am so excited to share my Chunky Granny Stripe Beanie crochet pattern with you. The Chunky Granny Stripe Beanie makes up so fast and it is the perfect project for selling at craft fairs or in your online shop. Make it in any of the amazing colours found in the Lions Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarns. The Mustard and Pumpkin are super trendy right now, but the neutrals, such as oatmeal and fisherman (ivory) are also very popular. It is also fun to use some Christmassy colours if you are wanting a festive Christmas hat. I used three colours for my granny stripes in my hats.

Description of the Chunky Granny Stripe Beanie Free Pattern.

The Chunky Granny Stripe Beanie crochet pattern is a top down beanie. You start with a loop and work downwards. The body of the beanie is made up of double crochet stitches worked on a huge crochet hook, so it has this great cozy texture. The brim is made with single crochet stitches worked into the back loop only, and this is all explained in the written instructions,

Don’t forget to pin it for later so you don’t lose it.

The great thing about this design is that you can make it super slouchy if you like by adding extra rows before you do the trim.

Here are some video tutorials on how to make a different super simple  Chunky Beanie.

All About the Yarn.

I always use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick whenever I make up my Chunky Beanie crochet pattern.  I tried using a substitute but it never had the luxurious, cozy appeal.  I think it is the fact that this yarn is 20% wool and 80% acrylic, so it has a softness and springiness that is hard to duplicate with other yarns. You can however substitute any super bulky weight yarn you have available to make these beanies, but they might have a different feel and vibe.
I have used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick on other crochet patterns here on my blog, including the Short and Chunky Fingerless Gloves   and my Warmest Feet Ever Slipper Socks.

Colourways:

Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn is available in a wide variety of shades, including neutrals, and lovely earth tones and pinks etc. It is such a user friendly yarn and just great for making these crochet beanies.
Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick is a super bulky weight yarn with a number 6 on the label.

Care instructions for Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick.

Instructions:

Do not turn at the end of each round as it is worked in the round.
I used three colours, you may customize your Chunky Granny Stripe Beanie with multi- colour stripes if you like.
Colour A- Blackstone
Colour B- Oatmeal
Colour C- Cranberry

Start with Your Colour A

Chain 3 and join with a sl st to make a small ring, or make a Magic Loop to start.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc). (1 dc. Ch 1) in ring. Next make (2 dc. ch 1) 4 times. Join Colour B with sl st to the top of the ch 3 (10 DC)
Round 2: With Colour B, Ch 3 (counts as dc), make (1 dc. Ch 1. 2 dc) in same sp  * make (2 dc. Ch 1. 2 dc) in next ch-1 sp. Rep from * around. Ch1. Join Colour C with sl st to top of ch 3. (20 dc and 10 ch-1 sps.)
Round 3: With Colour C, Ch 3 (counts as dc). 2 dc in same sp. * 3 dc in next sp. Rep from * around. Join Colour A with sl st to top of ch 3. (10 3dc shells)
Round 4: With Colour A, Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same sp. * 3 dc in next sp. Rep from * around. Ch 1. Join Colour B with sl st to top of ch 3. (10 3dc shells)
Round 5: With Colour B, Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same sp. * 3 dc in next sp. Rep from * around. Ch 1. Join Colour C with sl st to top of ch 3. (10 3dc shells)
Round 6: With Colour C, Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same sp. * 3 dc in next sp. Rep from * around. Join A with sl st to top of ch 3. (10 3dc shells)

Round 7: With A, Ch 3 (counts as dc), 1 dc in same sp. * 3 dc in next sp, 3 dc in next sp, 2dc in next sp,*  Rep between * and * around. Join B with sl st to top of ch 3. (4 – 2dc shells and 6 – 3dc shells)

Now we begin the brim.

Round 8: With B, ch 1. Work 1 sc in each dc around to the end. Skip over the ch1 you did at the beginning of round 8 and join with a sl st into the 2nd sc st you made.  This means you should have 25 sc sts for the brim.
Note: If you want a tighter brim you can adjust it in row 8 by decreasing a few stitches evenly around the round.
Round 9: Ch 1. BLO sc into each st around. Join with sl st to top of ch 1.
Rounds 10-11: Ch 1. BLO sc into each st around. Join with sl st to top of ch 1.
Fasten off, weave in ends. You can also add a pom pom if you want one.

I hope you love your Chunky Granny Stripe Beanie
