Description of The Happy Hippy Scarf Free Crochet Pattern.

This easy Happy Hippy Scarf Free Crochet Pattern is made using worsted weight yarn and the gauge is not important for this project.

The granny stripe stitch creates a great texture. There are also rows of double crochet and some using Treble or triple Crochet Stitches.

Each stitch is used to create the stripes that add to the stylishness and look of this super long scarf. It is so long that it can be worn long, hanging down in front, or wrapped several times around your neck for a different feel.

Here is a close up of the scarf showing the stripes, stitches and fringe.

Lot of people love this super long scarf style as it is so airy and its length is fabulous.

The Happy Hippy Scarf.

Finished size:

Approximately 136″ long (146″ long with the fringe) x 6” wide.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: #4 medium worsted weight yarn, (Aran in the UK)

You will need 1 skein of each colour and you will have yarn left over. For my Happy Hippy Scarf I used fall themed colours from my stash.

Hook: Size N/15 – 10.00 mm

Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.

Gauge: 8 dc – 5 dc rows = 4” (10 cm) with a N./10mm hook

(Feel free to go down a hook size to get the correct gauge. You might find the L,/8.00mm works for you)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

Ch = chain
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
Tr = treble crochet
Sp = space
Sk = skip

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

Instructions:

Note:

Shell: this refers to the combination of 3 dc into one stitch or space.

Start with Colour A. I used brown

Ch 245

Row 1: Right Side. DC into the 3rd chain from hook. (this acts as 2 dc) Skip 2 stitches, then work 3dcs into the next stitch, (this is your first shell). Repeat between * and * until there are two stitches left, sk1 st, work 2 dc into the last st. (you will have 80 shells and 2dc on each end) Turn your work.

You should have a row that begins and ends with 2dc’s. on either side of all your shells.

For the next row you will be working into the spaces between the 3dc shells of the previous row.

Change to Colour B, I used green.

Row 2: Ch 3, then work 3dc stitches (a shell) into the first sp between the 2dcs at the end of the previous row and the next 3 dc shell. Work a 3dc shell into each space across. At the end of the row, work 1 dc into the top of the ch3 made at start of previous row. Turn work. (81 Shells)

Change to Colour C, I used yellow.

Row 3: Chain 4, Treble crochet into the first stitch and each stitch across, turn work. (243 stitches)

Change to Colour D, I used pumpkin.

Row 4: Chain 3, DC into the first stitch and into each stitch across. Turn work. (243 stitches)

Change to Colour E, I used Pumpkin Pie.

Row 5: Chain 4, Treble crochet into the first stitch and each stitch across, turn work. (243 stitches)

Change to Colour F, I used Mustard.

Row 6: Ch 3, DC into the same stitch, (This counts as two dcs) Skip 2 stitches, then work 3dcs into the next stitch, (this is your first shell). Repeat between * and * until there are 3 stitches left, sk2 st, work 2 dc into the last st.

You should have a row that begins and ends with 2dc’s. on either side of all your shells.

Special Note.

For the next row you will be working into the spaces between the 3dc shells of the previous row.

Change to Colour G, I used Brown.

Row 7: Chain 3, then work 3dc stitches (a shell) into the first sp between the 2dcs at the end of the previous row and the next 3 dc shell. Work a 3 dc shell into each space across. At the end of the row, work 1 dc into the top of the ch3 made at start of previous row.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Adding a Fringe. (Optional)

Note:

I placed 2 fringes at the end of each row of the Happy Hippy Scarf. I chose to match the colours of the fringes to the colours of the stripes in the scarf.

Instructions for the Fringe.

Lay the scarf on a flat surface with the right side facing up.

For the fringe I cut strands of yarn that are 10” long. I used a piece of card 5″ long to wrap my yarn around. I placed 2 sets of fringes on each end of the 7 rows of my scarf, so I wrapped each colour of the yarn around the card 12 times, allowing for 3 strands of yarn for each fringe. Then I cut through all the strands on one side of the card, creating 12 individual 10” long strands.

Each fringe has three, 10” strands of yarn, which are folded, (put the ends together and this creates the loop that can be threaded into the edge of the scarf and then knotted on). This creates a 6 stranded fringe.

I use a crochet hook to pull the loops through and then thread the long strands of the fringe through the loop and pull tight to create the knot. Here is how I do it.

Insert your crochet hook up and through a loop on the end of one row of the scarf, do this from the back of the work
Grab the loop created by folding the strands of yarn. Use a hook that is big enough to hook the yarn and pull through the loop. Always pull the fringe loop through from the same direction so the knots all match.
Enlarge the loop you have pulled down so it is big enough to bring the long strands down and thread them through this loop.
Pull the loop tight and move on to the next fringe.

Now repeat the process at the other end of the rows of your scarf.

When you have the fringes done on the ends of each row of your scarf you can trim the fringe to the preferred length. This is up to your individual taste.
