Autumn Granny Stripe Cowl, Free Cowl Pattern

Introducing the Autumn Granny Stripe Cowl Free Crochet Pattern. This is a great cowl style scarf perfect for beginners.
This  cowl free crochet pattern is a super cozy circle scarf made with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (6) super bulky yarn and it looks so elegant and is super trendy.
You can make this Autumn Cowl free crochet pattern with the Granny Stripe Crochet Stitch, which uses the double crochet stitch.

I wanted to make this modern crochet cowl design as a simple pattern for beginners. Often as a beginner  it is hard to find simple patterns that have the reward of an accessory you can wear with pride. The Autumn Cowl free crochet pattern is one of those patterns. Using the large hook makes the cluster stitches grow quickly as you make your cozy granny stripe cowl.

Description of The Autumn Cowl Free Crochet Pattern.

The Autumn Cowl free crochet pattern is made with super bulky weight yarn, (6) and I use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn.  It is a wool acrylic blend and the 20% wool in this yarn makes it super warm and so soft and easy to wear. This yarn is the go to yarn for makers as it is so quick to work up and makes the softest projects imaginable. It also comes in a huge selections of gorgeous colours. I used the grey and spice for the ones in these pictures.
This easy Autumn Cowl is made using the granny stitch which uses the double crochet stitch in clusters. It is made in the round so there is no sewing involved.
Here is a close up of how beautiful the Granny Stitch looks worked up on the large Q hook.

Introducing the Autumn Granny Stripe Cowl, a great cowl style scarf perfect for adventurous beginners.
This is a super cozy circle scarf made with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (6) super bulky yarn and it looks so elegant and lacy.
You can make this Chunky Granny Stripe Cowl with the granny stripe stitch, creating clusters out of double crochet stitches. I have the written instructions below.

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
US

UK
Double crochet (dc)
Treble (tr)

Notes for the Pattern:

Increasing and decreasing the pattern for the cowl which is made in the round.
Always start with multiples of 3 plus 3.
For the Autumn Cowl I used: 3 x 12 = 36 plus 3 makes 39. This means you start with a chain of 39.
To make a smaller cowl circumference you can use 3 less stitches and start with 36.
To make it larger go up 3 and start with a chain of 42.

Instructions:

Note:
This cowl is made in the round so there is no seam to sew.
A shell is created when you do 3dc into one space or st.
I used two colours, you may customize your Autumn Cowl with multi- colour stripes if you like.
Colour A- Spice
Colour B- Grey

Start with Spice
Chain 39, slip stitch into first ch to form a loop. Make sure not to twist the yarn.
Round 1: Ch2, make 2 dc into the same ch (this acts as a 3dc shell), sk2 ch, make 3dc into the next ch, *sk2 ch, make 3dc into the next chain*, repeat between * and * to the end and join with a sl st to the top of the ch2. (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
Change to grey.
Round 2: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp between the 3 dc shells from the previous round, make 3dc into each sp around to the last sp, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
Change to spice
Round 3: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp, make 3dc into each sp around, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st. (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
Change to grey
Round 4: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp, make 3dc into each sp around, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
 Change to spice
Round 5: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp, make 3dc into each sp around, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
Change to grey
Round 6: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp, make 3dc into each sp around, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
Change to spice
Round 7: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp, make 3dc into each sp around, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
Change to grey
Round 8: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp, make 3dc into each sp around, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
Change to spice
Round 9: Ch 3, make a 3dc shell into the next sp, make 3dc into each sp around, make 2dc into the last sp and join to the top of the ch3 with a sl st (there will be 13, 3dc shells)
