The Simple Phone Bag

Pattern by Pam Carr ©2025

Introducing the Simple Phone Bag Pattern. This Simple Phone Bag is great for a teacher’s gifts or for anyone needing to keep their phone safe and handy when out and about.
It is a versatile and beginner friendly phone bag.  I made mine from cotton as it is so durable. Make it from bright cheery colours fun vibes or your favourite neutral tones for a modern look. The choice is yours

The Simple Phone Bag is made with the single crochet and half double crochet stitches. There is a loop fastener and a button to hold it closed. It is beginner friendly.

The Simple Phone Bag

Size:

The finished phone holder measures 5” wide and 7” tall approximately. This fits the newer iPhones with a case on.

Supplies you will need:
Yarn: worsted weight cotton yarn (4) The phone holder in the pictures is made with cotton yarn. You can use any acrylic worsted weight (4) yarn

Hook: Size H/8 -5.0 mm
Notions:  Button, needle and thread, scissors, tapestry needle.
Gauge: 12 hdc – 10 hdc rows = 4” (10 cm)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

Ch = chain
St = stitch
Sl st = slip stitch
Sc = single crochet
Hdc = half double crochet
This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
US
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Single Crochet (sc)

UK
Half Treble crochet (htrc)
Double Crochet (dc)

Instructions:

Ch 15

Round 1: sc in second chain from hook and sc 13 across, turn and make another sc into the same st.
Now work down the opposite side of chain and sc in the next 13 sts, (28sc)

Round 2: hdc in next st and in every stitch around.  (28 hdc)
You will now begin working in a spiral up the bag so there will be no ch1 at the start of each new round, and no to joining with a slip stitch at the end of each round. We just keep crocheting around in a spiral.

Work until you have 16 rounds. Slip stitch into the next st.

Round 17:
Ch 1, sc into the first st and into each of the next 27 stitches around. Join to the top of the ch1 with a slip stitch., (28 sc)

Rounds 18:
Ch 1, sc into each of the next 7 st, ch 10, sk 1 st, sc into each of the next 20 st. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch1. (27 sc and 10 chains)
Do not fasten off.
Make the strap.
Note:
I made a 48” strap but you can customize to the length that works for you. Normally anything between 45” and 55” works for cross body bags.
Ch 160 for the handle.
You can make your chain longer or shorter to customize it to your needs.
Attach your chain to the bag on the opposite side with a slip st making sure not to twist the chain.
Turn your work.
Make another sl st into the next st.
Row 1: Sl st into the 1st ch and sl st into each ch to the end, sl st into the st beside where the chain was started.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Centre the button on the front of your phone bag and sew it on.
You now have a beautiful Simple Phone Holder.
