Christmas Basket: Free Crochet Pattern

Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern

Introducing this Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern for you. This bowl shaped basket pattern is perfect for holding candies or chocolates or even as a home decor item filled with Christmas ornaments.

Crochet Baskets are so soft and comforting and add a great feel and warmth to your home decor. I love to have a few around as they are great for organizing and storing all kinds of things that need a home.
This basket serves a double purpose as not only is it a great addition to any space in your home, but it is  also a great way to get rid of your yarn stash. The Christmas Basket is made with worsted weight yarn and is great way to use up your stash.
The important thing to note with this pattern is that this basket is made with two strands of yarn being held together, so you are creating a double thickness that makes the basket sturdier. All you do is hold the tails of the two strands together as you create your magic circle to start and work as if you only have a single strand, making sure you alway have both strands on the hook as you work.

Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern

I used mainly the Half Double crochet stitch and an H, 5mm hook for this Christmas basket. Using the smaller hook with the double strand technique gives it the solid texture that is needed so the basket stands up and holds its shape.  This basket looks so beautiful when make with two different colours of yarn held together as you work.
By mixing up the colours you get a great artisan look. Such a beautiful addition to any space.
You can make this Christmas Basket with worsted weight (4) yarn or Aran for those in the UK. You can use either acrylic or cotton as well as 100% wool for this basket.
For those new to crochet, there are left and right handed videos on my Carroway Crochet YouTube channel that will demonstrate the single crochet and half double crochet stitch.

Inspiration for The Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern

The inspiration for my Free Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern was the need to create something useful and beautiful and also that fit with the Christmas decor theme.  By working with two strands of yarn, and choosing seasonal colours,  you can create a really beautiful looking basket. You can of course choose to use two matching strands of yarn for a solid coloured basket.
I wanted this project to be a beginner friendly pattern that also had a great solid texture and special style. Let me know what you think?

Introducing the Christmas Basket

You can make this basket using up your scrap stash yarn. I used worsted weight (4) yarn or Aran for those in the UK. To make the basket firm I used two strands held as I crocheted the basket and I love mixing up the Christmas colours to get this great folksy look. Such a beautiful addition to any space. It is perfect for holding chocolates of other Christmas goodies.
For those new to crochet, there are left and right-handed videos on my Carroway Crochet YouTube channel that will demonstrate the single crochet and half double crochet stitch.

Christmas Basket Crochet Pattern

Size: 4.5” wide base, 2.5” tall approximately

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: worsted weight (4) Yarn. I used up some of my Christmas colours found in my scrap yarn stash and held two contrasting colours together to create this beautiful effect. You will be using two strands held together as you make this basket.
You can use any worsted weight/Aran yarn for this basket.
Hook: Size -H/8- 5.00 mm
Notions:  Scissors, tapestry needle.
Gauge: 11 hdc – 10 hdc rows = 4” (10 cm)

Special Stitch for this project.

For this basket you need to do the half double crochet back loop only stitch. (hdcblo). This helps create the bottom edge of the basket as you start to create the sides of the basket.
You will be working the half double crochet stitch, but it is done into the back loop of the stitch.
I created a video showing how to do the back loop only technique using the single crochet stitch and posted it onto youtube for you. I hope this helps you understand how to work into the back loop of the stitch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQhzE70Ov-U
