double pom pom baby beanie pattern

Hi everyone. I fell in love with this style of  baby beanie when I first saw them. Topped with two handmade yarn pom poms they are the cutest baby beanies ever. The first double pom pom baby beanie I ever made was knit. I made them for my market stall and I have to admit they sold like hot cakes. I got the knit baby beanie hat  pattern from the amazing Destiny over at  Knifty Knittings.  Be sure to pop over to her blog and check out everything she is sharing there. It is amazing.
I usually crochet so decided to come up with my own pattern for a crochet double pom pom baby beanie. I used Lions Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick, which is  a super bulky yarn, to make my hats,  and my handy dandy pom pom maker for the pom poms. I was so happy and love result.  Today I am sharing this pattern with you. It is written up for three sizes; (Newborn, 3-6 months and 6-12 months).  I have actually had requests for adult double pom pom beanies but so far I have only knit them. At least that is the case for now.
When you are making your beanie, you can always turn it into a stash busting project and do a colour block if you like, or even create some stripes. I love getting creative with crochet projects.

Description of The Double Pom Pom Baby Beanie pattern.

This beanie is a fitted hat and crocheted with super bulky yarn using the double crochet stitch for the body and the back loop only single crochet stitch to create the brim around the bottom so the hat fits snugly.
It is made using a top down method, so you can make it longer if you want to.  It really is a beginner friendly pattern and I would describe the skill level as Easy.
In the one pictured below I actually used two strands of Worsted Weight (4) yarn instead of the single strand of super bulky (6) yarn and it worked out great. So that is always an option if all you have is Worsted Weight yarn.

If you love the idea of a Mommy and Me set you could always make the fitted version of my Freedom Beanie and just add two slightly larger pom poms to it. It is made with the same super bulky yarn.
You might also be interested in my Dreamer Beanie pattern which is free here on my blog. It is an adult slouchy beanie made with worsted weight yarn. The Simple Striped Beanie is another popular hat pattern using this Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn.
Don’t forget to pin this adorable beanie for later so you don’t lose it.

All About the Yarn.

For my Double Pom Pom Baby Beanie pattern I decided to use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick as it is so soft and comes in some great neutral colours, as well as in Blossom (pink) and Fisherman (soft white). Great colours for baby hats. Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn is so versatile and can be used in so many different types of projects. It has the feel, warmth and softness of wool with the easy care of acrylic yarn. This yarn is so popular with makers as it is perfect for extra warm sweaters, jackets, vests, slippers and hats. It’s an ideal beginner yarn.

I have used this in the past  for my Freedom Beanie pattern, which is in my Etsy shop and also for my Short and Chunky Fingerless Gloves pattern which is here on my blog . It is also great for making my Warmest Feel Ever Slippers, which is also free here on Carroway Crochet.

Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick is a super bulky weight yarn with a number (6) on the label. It is an acrylic/wool blend. 80% acrylic and 20% wool.

Care instructions for Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick.

The Lion Brand Website recommends you machine wash with the initial water temperature not exceeding 40C or 105F. No bleach product may be used with this yarn. A machine dryer may be regularly used at the hottest available temperature setting. Do not smooth or finish with an iron.

Adding the Pom Poms

Make two yarn pom poms. I used the Essential Pom Pom maker pictured below. Make sure you leave long tails when you tie off the pom pom. You will need these for attaching the pom pom to the hat.

pom pom maker

Attach your pom poms by tying them onto a dc stitch in the second row down from the top.  Make sure to position them carefully on either side of the hat so that they fall in the right place. After tying the pom pom onto the dc stitch, use a yarn needle to thread the tail end of yarn back up through the pom pom and then back down and tie tightly once more on the inside of the hat. This serves to anchor the pom pom more securely. Weave in the ends.
