Free crochet pattern for a slouchy beanie

Introducing the free crochet pattern for The Dreamer Slouchy Beanie hat. This hat is a soft and warm, fashionable beanie with the perfect slouchiness to it.
The slouchy beanie is so versatile and can be worn with practically any outfit you desire. This fabulous hat is a great accessory for Fall, Winter or even the cool days and nights of Spring. Chic and cosy.

Why call this The Dreamer Beanie?
As I look around at the women in my life and community I see so many strong women who dare to dream and take action to manifest a better life for themselves and those around them.

As I thought about who would be wearing the precious items that I make from my designs, I thought of these women and how I want my company to reflect the values and hopes of these women. The Dreamer Slouchy Beanie is a universal accessory that suits women of all ages and styles.

I hope the positive energy put into the creation of this pattern inspires others to dream it and do it.

I am so happy to share this free crochet pattern so those who ‘dream and do’ can make one for themselves.

There is a printer friendly PDF of this pattern in my Etsy shop if you prefer a printed version. It is reasonably priced and the perfect way to help support me to keep writing my blog and sharing more patterns with you.

A beginner friendly free slouchy beanie crochet pattern for you.

This pattern is a beginner pattern using the double crochet and single crochet stitch. You might also like my Short and Chunky Fingerless Gloves. They are super fast and easy to make and would look great with this slouchy beanie.

There are two options you can go for, with or without a brim. Here you can see it with a brim.

Don’t forget to pin so you don’t lose this pattern.

And here it is without the brim.

Black Crochet Slouchy beanie

For those new to crochet, there are many videos on YouTube that will demonstrate the single crochet and double crochet stitches as well as the Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet.

I have posted some how to crochet videos on my channel. So far I have an introduction to crochet and how to chain, as well as how to do the single crochet. I plan on adding more in the near future. But if you search YouTube you will find lots of options to help you out.

So here we go, good luck.

Supplies you will need for your slouchy beanie:

Yarn: One skein of Worsted weight (4).

The brown hat pictured above is Red Heart Super Saver yarn, in the colour Café Latte. The other hat in Caron’s Simply Soft yarn in Soft Green, pink, yellow and black.

Hook: Size US – H /8, 5.00 mm.

Notions:  Tapestry needle and scissors.

Gauge: 13 sc – 14 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Be sure to try a swatch first to check the gauge. You can start with a chain of 15 and crochet 14 rows and then measure to see if 13 stitches across are 4″ and that the 14 rows are also 4″.  If there is a big difference then use a different sized hook to correct things. If yours it coming out too big, then go down to a 4mm hook, and if you crochet tightly and it comes out too small, then go up a hook size to a 6mm hook. I hope this helps you to understand the purpose of the gauge whenever you see it in a pattern. It makes a difference to your finished project.

Size: Teen/Adult

Finished Hat Size: 20-23“/ 51-56 cm in circumference.

Abbreviations (uses US terms)

  • Ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • st = stitch
  • dc = double crochet

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US

single crochet (sc)

double crochet (dc)

UK

Double crochet (dc)

Treble (tr)

There are some special stitches used in the Brimmed Version of the Dreamer Beanie pattern.

For the brim you will do Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet.

Here is a great video tutorial to learn this technique.

She starts the technique at 2.07 minutes into the video. We already have our row of Double Crochet so don’t need the first two minutes of her tutorial.

Here are the written instructions for how to do the FPDC or front post double crochet.

Yarn over, insert hook from the front side of the work to back and then to front again, around the post of the indicated stitch on the previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops, (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops, (1 loop on hook).

And for the BPDC or back post double crochet.

Yarn over, insert hook from the back side of the work to front and to back again around the post of the indicated stitch on the previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops (1 loop on hook)

A tip to remember when working this ribbed brim.

When you work 1 front post double crochet (FP DC) around the post of the double crochet in the row below, this stitch is raised on the surface of the fabric facing you. Always make sure that the post stitches are raised to the same side in each successive row or round. Keep an eye on the ribs and remember: If the stitch you’re working is raised to the front, work a front post stitch; if the stitch is raised to the back, work a back post stitch.
