Sunny Square Pattern: Free Crochet Square Pattern.

How to Crochet A Sunny Square.

I came up with my Sunny Square Design when I was invited to design a blanket square pattern for The Melange Blanket CAL 2023
This is something that Marie from Underground Crafter dreamed up.
Join me for the Mélange Blanket CAL

Why call it the Melange Blanket CAL?

. It is an exciting year-long project, 48 amazing crochet designers have come together to share a new 6″ square pattern weekly on Fridays. This is going to be a journey of cool techniques, all sorts of textures and innovative patterns, a way of meeting new-to-you designers, and so much more! I hope you’ll be joining us. All the info is on Underground Crafters blog post.

I am so excited to share my Sunny Square Pattern as a part of the Melange Blanket CAL

About the Sunny Square Pattern.

This square is a bit different as it starts out with a circle which is then worked into a square. I just love how the yellow centre reminds me of the sun, the front post double crochet stitches create sun rays.

Once you complete the circular section you add the corners and it becomes a versatile square that can be used to make many items, such as blankets, bags, sweaters etc.

This pattern is for a 6” square to be used in a blanket. I used worsted (4) weight yarn and a J-6mm hook.

The Sunny Square Details.

The sunray effect is created in the middle of this square by using the front post double crochet. This lifts up the stitches to create the sunshine texture.

Instructions:

Note: This square is made from the centre out, like a granny square.
The ch2 starting ch does not count as a stitch.
Start with yellow yarn
Make a magic circle or ch4 and join with a sl st to the first ch to make a circle, do not twist the chain.
Round 1: ch1, make 8 sc into the loop, sl st into 1st stitch to join, (8 sts)
Round 2: ch2, 2dc into the first st and into every stitch around. Sl st into the top of the  ch2 to join,  (total 16 sts)
Round 3: ch2, * 2dc into the first st, fpdc into the next st, * repeat between * and * 8 times, sl st into 1st stitch to join,  ( 24 sts )
Round 4: Ch2, *2dc into the 1st st, 1dc into the next st,* repeat between * and * to the end, join with a sl st to the top of the ch2) (36)
We are now going to transition from the circle into the square section. This is done by creating four corners. We start with only half the cluster and it will be completed at the end of the round.
Change colour:
Round 5:  Ch4 (this acts as the first triple crochet), 2dc into the same st, 8 sc around to where the next corner will be, 2dc, tc into the next st, ch 2,  *tc, 2dc into the same st, 8 sc around, 2dc and tr into the next st, ch2*, repeat between * and * 2 more times, sl st into the top of the third st of the ch4 to join.
Round 6: Ch2 ( this acts as the first hdc) ,  make 2hdc into the same corner sp, make 14 dc across to the next corner, 3hdc into the ch2 sp, ch2, *3hdc into the same corner sp, 14hdc across to the next corner,  3hdc into the ch2 sp, ch2, *. Repeat between * and * 2 more times, sl st to join.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
