Who doesn’t love a colourful and light Summer Wrap.  Create your own modern, light, wrap or shawl. I used Lion Brand Mandala yarn to get these fabulous colour changes as the wrap grows. The Summer Wrap is a versatile shawl style wrap that you can style many ways.

Hi everyone. I am so excited to share this new free crochet pattern with you. The Summer Wrap crochet pattern features the sedge stitch and it is a light and airy wrap for summer days.

Description of my Summer Wrap:

The Summer Wrap is created  from the bottom up which makes it the perfect project to do while chilling with a movie.  Once you have got into the rhythm of the sedge stitch you just keep going.

I chose the sedge stitch for this pattern as it is a simple stitch but creates such a high impact. The texture it creates is quite magical.

This Summer Wrap is 17 ” (43 cm) wide approximately and 60″ (152.5 cm) long. Of course you can customize it by adding extra stitches for added width, and doing extra rows to make it longer. Just remember to always go up in multiples of 3 when adding stitches for the sedge stitch.

Don’t forget to pin it for later so you don’t lose it.

   

All About the Yarn I Chose for my Summer Wrap.

For this pattern I decided to use Lion Brand Mandala yarn in the colourway Troll. I chose this yarn as the colours were so vibrant and it was perfect for my vision of a summer wrap. It is 100 % acrylic and the perfect weight for crocheters. You can make a scarf or a small shawl with just one ball. I used two as I wanted my summer wrap to be wider and longer than one ball would allow.

Each skein weighs 5.3 oz/150 g and it is made in Turkey.

Colourways:

Mandala yarn comes in an exceptionally wide range of enchanting colors, from jewel tones to bright children’s colors, and even classic shades for men, one glimpse of this mystical  yarn will leave you spellbound.

Another big plus for Lion Brand Mandala yarn is that it is so easy to care for. You can wash and dry it in your machines.

The Summer Wrap is a  free crochet pattern and is perfect for advanced beginners as well as advanced crocheters.

 

The Summer Wrap Pattern

 

 

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Lion Brand Mandala yarn. It is a weight (3) yarn. The wrap pictured here was made using the colourway Troll. You will need two skeins to make this wrap to the size in this pattern.

Hook: Size US – L/11- 8.00 mm.

Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors. Button

Gauge: 4 sedge stitch clusters X 4 sedge stitch rows = 4” (10 cm)

 

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

• Ch = chain

• st = stitch

• dc = Double crochet

• hdc = Half Double crochet

• sl st = Slip stitch

• sc = single crochet

Special stitch. The Sedge Stitch (always cast on multiples of 3 for the sedge stitch)

To make the Sedge stitch:

1. Into the 2^nd chain from the hook make a hdc and a dc, sk 2 chains and in the next chain work a  sc, hdc, dc, (all into the same chain st), * sk 2 ch, repeat the sc, hdc, dc into the next ch st, * repeat between the * and * to the end of the row. There will be one chain left, Work a sc into the last ch and turn.

2. Ch1, (this counts as the 1^st sc), Then make a hdc and a dc into the top of the sc that you made at the end of the row below. Skip over the the DC, hdc and make a sc, hdc, dc into the top of the sc in the row below. You will always be working into the top of the sc in the previous row, this is where you will work the sc, hdc, dc cluster.

Row 2 forms the pattern for the sedge stitch.

I just love the beautiful texture the sedge stitch creates!

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US Double crochet (dc) Half double crochet (hdc) Single Crochet (sc)

UK Treble (tr) Half Treble crochet (htrc) Double Crochet (dc)

 

Instructions:

Start the wrap with a single crochet foundation chain of 30 stitches.

Row 1:  Into the 2^nd chain from the hook make a hdc and a dc, sk 2 chains and in the next chain work a sc, hdc, dc, (all into the same chain st),  * sk 2 ch, make a sc, hdc, dc into the next ch st, *  repeat between the * and * to the end of the row. There will be one chain left, Work a sc into the last ch and turn.

Row 2: Ch1, (this counts as the 1^st sc), Then make a hdc and a dc into the top of the sc that you made at the end of the row below. Skip over the the DC, hdc and make a sc, hdc,,dc into the top of the sc in the row below. You will always be working into the top of the sc in the previous row, this is where you will work the sc, hdc, dc cluster.

Repeat Row 2 until your wrap measure 60” (152.5 cm) or your desired length.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.
