Description of my Rustic Mini Beanie Ornament:

These Rustic Mini Beanie Ornaments are made with the simple single crochet. To create the ribbed look you  make each single crochet stitch into the back loop only.
I call them rustic as that is the feeling I get when using the super bulky Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn, especially when it has the flecks in it as the Kale and Oatmeal colours do.
You can also use these cute rustic mini beanies to tie to your gifts when you wrap them.

Don’t forget to pin it for later so you don’t lose it.

Christmas Crochet Ideas.

The idea for these rustic mini beanie ornaments came when I was brainstorming ideas for Christmas tree ornaments. I thought what could be cuter than some mini beanies for the tree, especially as I live in Canada. In fact some might say I should be calling them toques.
I had seen some small beanies made with worsted weight yarn and I thought I would try and make some with my favourite super bulky yarn that I use for all my beanies for the market. That yarn is Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn. I am so happy with the results and  I think they turned out great.
To make the mini pom poms for this beanie I used the smallest size pom pom maker in my pom pom making set.
Here is a great pom pom maker if you don’t want to make them by hand. I do have instructions on how to make a pom pom without a maker on my tea cozy blog post.
This is the pom pom maker I use, but there are many others on the market.

The Rustic Mini Beanie Ornament

Introducing the Rustic Mini Beanie Ornament which is made with super bulky  yarn and the single crochet stitch.
These mini beanies are super cute as ornaments for your Christmas Tree but could also double as a tie when you are wrapping presents or anything else you would like to use them for. They would also make a great garland if you attach them to a long chain.
I would love to see lots of your Mini Beanie ornament creations in all the different colours once they are done.
Supplies you will need:
Yarn: Super Bulky weight yarn (6) I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn for my mini beanie ornaments. You may wish to make your pom pom with a contrasting colour.
You may use other super bulky (6) yarn but the mini beanie ornament’s size may vary. This is a great project for using up your super bulky yarn stash.
Hook: Size N– 9.00mm

Notions:

You will also need a pom pom maker if you don’t want to make them by hand without one. I have instructions on how to make a pom pom without a maker on my tea cozy blog post.
This is the pom pom maker I use, but there are many others on the market.

            Scissors,
            Tapestry needle.
Gauge: 8 sc – 6 sc rows = 4” (10 cm) with a N/ 9.00mm hook
(Feel free to go up or down a hook size to get the correct gauge.)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)
  • Ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • scblo = single crochet back loop only
Special Stitches for this Pattern.
Back Loop Only BLO
This mini beanie is made using the single crochet back loop only stitch.  (scblo)

When you see blo after sc it is to indicate that you do the specified stitch into the back loop only of the previous stitch. I have a video on how to find the back loop on my youtube channel.
This pattern uses US terminology.
The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US

Single Crochet (sc)

UK

Double Crochet (dc)

Size: 4” wide at the bottom. 4” tall with the brim rolled up. This does not include the pom pom

Instructions:
Do not count the turning ch as a stitch
With N hook, Chain 12,
Row 1: sc into the 2nd ch from the hook and sc across to the end, Ch1 and turn (11 st)
Row 2: scblo into the first st and into every st across, Ch1 and turn (11 st)
Rows 3-10 Repeat Row 2
Fold in half lengthways and seam together using a slst.
Fasten off leaving a long tail (approx. 8“). Using this yarn tail and a yarn needle, gather up the stitches along the top of the mini beanie and pull tight. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Turn the mini-beanie right side out and fold up the brim.
Make a mini pom pom and attach to the top of your mini-beanie.
I used this pom pom maker, the Essential Pom Pom Maker from Amazon, and used the smallest size for the mini beanie pom poms.  There are many others on the market.
You can also  make pom poms by hand without a pom pom maker. I have instructions for hand made pom poms over on my Tea Cozy Post.
Finally, cut a piece of yarn long enough to make a loop to hang up your ornament. Thread it through the top of your rustic mini beanie and you are ready to hang it on your tree.

  1. I am not seeing the coupon code for your patterns. I really loved the mini beanies but there was no code. I looked today also for the french press cozy and again no coupon.

    1. Hi Linda, there is no coupon code for you to enter for this event. Click on the picture at the bottom of each of the design blog pages and it takes you to ravelry. Click on the Use this Coupon Code below the llama picture and you will be at the checkout where the pattern will be free. All the patterns are free until Dec 26th so you can still get the pattern for the mini beanie etc.
