How to Crochet a Washcloth,

The Summer’s Day Crochet Washcloth Pattern

Crochet Washcloth Pattern
Have you ever wondered how to get started on crocheting a washcloth?  This is the blog post for you. In this post I will take you through the simple steps on how to make this washcloth/dishcloth. In the process you will also have the added bonus of learning a new stitch.
This Crochet Washcloth Pattern is a fantastic first crochet project for a beginner, but its also a fun crochet washcloth pattern for experienced crocheters. Washcloths and dishcloths have become something of an obsession lately and I am even branching out to making crochet hand towels as they are also a quick make and are so useful to have around.
Are you someone who loves instant-gratification. This is a quick and easy crochet project which will give you sense of accomplishment in no time at all. It can be made in an afternoon and you can feel so satisfied to have something beautiful to hold, and know that your crochet washcloth is also something that is useful as well.  Having a quick Crochet Washcloth project to whip up allows you to mix things up and it  helps break up your bigger works in progress.

  • A pattern: There is the free crochet washcloth pattern here on my blog. Just scroll further down on my blog post to find it
  • Yarn: I recommend you use a cotton or mostly cotton blend yarn. You will need a worsted weight (4) yarn, commonly referred to as Aran in the UK.
  • A Crochet Hook. You will need an H/5mm crochet hook for this crochet washcloth.

Crochet Washcloth Pattern

Introducing the “Summer’s Day Washcloth” Pattern by Carroway Crochet.

The Summer’s Day Washcloth has a great texture and makes for a very absorbent washcloth for your luxurious spa days.
It is a beginner friendly pattern and comes with easy to follow instructions. It uses the blanket stitch to create an 8” washcloth.   I have clearly written instructions for the blanket stitch here, but there is also a video tutorial for this washcloth on my youtube channel to help you learn the blanket stitch if needed.

The Summer’s Day Washcloth

Crochet Washcloth Pattern

Size: 8”x 8”

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Category (4) or Aran if you are in the UK. I use a Cotton Yarn for washcloths as they are absorbent and soft. You can make your washcloth any colour you like. I used a white 100% cotton yarn for mine.  Lily Sugar n’ Cream is made from naturally soft cotton and is absorbent and would be great for this washcloth.

Hook:  H-5.00mm

Notions: Yarn Needle, Scissors.

Gauge: 5 blanket stitch clusters x 10 rows of blanket stitch = 4” x 4” square

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • dc = Double crochet

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

Row 2: Ch1, Make 2 DC into the base of the ch1 you just made. Skip over the 2DC st from the previous row, “SC, 2 DC” into the SC. You’ll always be looking for the SC to do your “SC, 2 DC” into. Repeat the pattern across ending the last stitch with one single crochet. (When you get to the end, you’ll have two stitches left, just skip one and SC into the last stitch). Turn work.
