Daisy Square: Free Crochet Pattern

I was invited to design a blanket square pattern for The Bouquet of Flowers Afghan CAL.

This is something that Helen from Sunflower Cottage Crochet was inspired to create.

WHY CALL IT THE BOUQUET OF FLOWERS AFGHAN?

We are all looking forward to spring and warmer weather. This year Helen picked the theme of flowers for her wonderful CAL. The Bouquet of Flower CAL runs from  February 28th until  April 15th 2022.

Every week 3 squares will be released over on her CAL blog post. This is where you can get all the free square patterns. Each square will  measure 10″ (once finished and blocked if necessary) and in total there are 20 squares.  There will be a variety of stitches and techniques so there should be something new for most of you during this CAL.

About the Daisy Square Pattern.

This  10″ blanket square pattern is made from the middle out, starting with a small loop or the magic circle.

The daisy petals are made using a (3) lightweight yarn in the US and Canada or DK yarn in the UK. I have used an H hook, (5mm).

The petals are created using the 3 Treble crochet cluster.

This square uses four colours and I love how the borders add interest to the beautiful daisy sitting in the middle. I hope you enjoy this pattern.

Daisy Square: Free Crochet Pattern

The 10” Daisy Square Pattern

Introducing the 10” Daisy Blanket Square. This square is made with (3) lightweight yarn in the US or Canada or DK yarn in the UK. I have used an H hook, (5mm).

I designed it especially for the Bouquet of Flowers CAL hosted by Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

This square uses four colours and I love how the borders add interest to the beautiful daisy sitting in the middle. I hope you enjoy this pattern.

Size: 10”X 10” blanket square

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Double Knit or Lightweight (3) yarn in four colours.

I used white, yellow, dark green and chocolate brown. I selected colours from my stash.

Hook: size, H/8-5.00mm
Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.

Gauge: 13sc – 15 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • st = stitch
  • tr = treble crochet
  • dc = double crochet.
  • Hdc = half double crochet
  • Sl St = slip stitch
  • Rnd – round
  • Ch = chain

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US
Half double crochet (hdc)

Double crochet (dc)

Treble crochet (tr)

UK
Half Treble Crochet (htr)

Treble crochet (tr)

Double treble (dtr)

Instructions:

Special Stitch for this pattern.

3 Treble or triple Crochet Cluster: This is for the petals of the daisy.
Yo twice, insert hook in next stitch, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook (yo twice, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook), (yo twice, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook.

The square is made with four colours, I will call them Colour A, Colour B, Colour C and Colour D.

Start with Colour A (I used yellow)

Chain 4 and join to the first ch with a sl st to make a small ring. Or make a magic ring.

Round 1: Ch 3 and make 11 tr in the ring, join to top of ch3 with a sl st, (12 Tr crochets)

Change to Colour B (I used white)

Round 2 is made with 3 treble crochet clusters as seen in the instructions above, however the first cluster is slightly different as it begins with the ch4 at the start of the round. It consists of the ch4, (which acts as the first tr of the cluster, and then two more tr cluster stitches are added), I have written up the steps of this first cluster below, and then you carry on with the regular 3 treble clusters as described above.

Attach yarn to any stitch in the circle you have created.

Round 2: Ch4, Yo twice, insert hook in base of ch4, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, (yo twice, insert hook in same st at the base of the ch4, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook, (This is your first petal.)

Now you will be making regular 3 treble crochet clusters as described in the Special Stitches for this Pattern instructions above *ch 2, make a 3tr cluster in the next st* Repeat between * and * ten more times. You will have twelve 3 treble cluster petals with ch2s in between each cluster. Join with a sl st to the top of the first cluster. Finish off.

Change to Colour C. (I used dark green)

Attach yarn in any space between two petals.

Round 3: Ch 3, 2tr into the same st, *make 3dc in the space between clusters, make 3 dc in next space between clusters, make 3tr, ch2, 3tr in the next space between the clusters*, repeat between * and * two more times, make 3dc in the space between clusters, make 3 dc in next space between clusters, make 3 tr into the final space, (where the ch3, 2tr was made at the beginning of this round, ch2 and join with a sl st to the top of the ch3.

Round 4: Ch2, 1dc into the same ch2 space of the previous corner, *dc into the first and every stitch across to the next corner, 2dc, ch2, 2dc into the ch2 space* Repeat between the * and * twice, dc into the first and every stitch across to the last corner, 2dc in the ch2 space, ch2 and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st.

Change to Colour B. Attach yarn to any corner ch2 space.

Round 5: Ch2, 1dc into the same ch2 space of the previous corner, *dc into the first and every stitch across to the next corner, 2dc, ch2, 2dc into the ch2 space* Repeat between the * and * twice, dc into the first and every stitch across to the last corner, 2dc in the ch2 space, ch2 and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st.

Change to Colour D. (I used Chocolate Brown)

Round 6:  Ch2, 1dc into the same ch2 space of the previous corner, *dc into the first and every stitch across to the next corner, 2dc, ch2, 2dc into the ch2 space* Repeat between the * and * twice, dc into the first and every stitch across to the last corner, 2dc in the ch2 space, ch2 and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st.

Round 7: Ch2, 1dc into the same ch2 space of the previous corner, *dc into the first and every stitch across to the next corner, 2dc, ch2, 2dc into the ch2 space* Repeat between the * and * twice, dc into the first and every stitch across to the last corner, 2dc in the ch2 space, ch2 and join to the top of the ch2 with a sl st.

Round 8: Ch1, 1hdc into the same ch2 space of the previous corner, *hdc into the first and every stitch across to the next corner, 2hdc, ch2, 2hdc into the ch2 space.* Repeat between the * and * twice, hdc into the first and every stitch across to the last corner, 2hdc in the ch2 space, ch2 and join to the top of the ch1 with a sl st.

Finish off and weave in all the ends.

  1. When I originally commented I clicked the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any way you can remove me from that service? Thanks!
