Description of The Highlands Hat Free Crochet Pattern.

The Highlands Beanie uses the half double crochet stitch and is a bottom up style crochet pattern. I used worsted weight (4) or arran yarn and there is a row using the back loop only single crochet stitch to create a nice finish along the bottom of the hat.
Another feature of this pattern is that it is mostly made in a spiral, so you don’t have a visible seam that usually occurs when you crochet individual rows that need to be joined as you crochet your hat.
I hope you enjoy making your Highland Beanie as much as I did. It is named after a beautiful area called the Highlands that is just outside of Victoria BC.
The Highland Beanie looks great in a solid colour or you could try a variegated yarn,

All About the Yarn.

I use Red Heart With Love yarn for this beanie but you can substitute any worsted weight (or Aran in the UK) yarn for my light weight Beanie crochet patterns. Red Heart With Love yarn is an ultra-soft premium acrylic worsted weight yarn. This yarn wins all hearts for its softness and sheer touch-ability.
Red Heart With Love yarn is 100% Acrylic and therefore it is machine wash and dry. Each solid colour skein has 198 g/7 oz and is 338 meters/370 yards long. The variegated yarn skeins are slightly different with 141 g/5 oz and 211 meters/230 yards, The Red Heart With Love Stripes skeins are 141 g/5 oz and 204 meters/223 yards. This is always good to know when planning future projects.

Colourways:

Red Heart With Love yarn is an ultra-soft premium acrylic worsted weight yarn. This yarn comes in over 50 beautiful solid, variegated and self-striping shades. It is easy care yarn, as it can be washed and dried. It is perfect for blankets, throws, hats, scarves and more.

Cleaning & Care

One of the secrets of Red Heart With Love yarn is it’s durability. You can wash and dry it over and over again and it will remain just as beautiful as the day you created it.

US
Single crochet (sc)
Half double crochet (hdc)
UK
Double crochet (dc)Half treble crochet (htr)

Size: Adult
Finished Hat Size: 22” circumference

Instructions:

Chain loosely 56
Join into a round by slip stitching the first and last chains together (careful not to twist).
This pattern is worked in the round.
Round 1: Ch 1, Sc around, join to the top of the ch1, (56 sc)
Round 2: Ch1, scblo into the first stitch and into each stitch around, join to top of the chain 1, (56 DC) There is a video link above showing  how to do this stitch if it is new to you.
Round 3: Ch2, HDC into each stitch around. Do not join to the top of the ch2.  (56 hdc)
Now we begin to work in a spiral. Place a stitch marker or a piece of yarn to keep track of the rounds as you go.
Round 4-17: sl st into the next st, sc into the next st, hdc into the next stitch.
Now you will just make a HDC into each stitch around until you have 17 rounds from the beginning or 8”. (If you want a slouchy hat then this is where you can carry on and make it longer.)
Now we will transition back into individual rounds for the decrease section.
Sc into the next st, sl st into the next st.
Begin the decrease.
Round 18: Ch 2, *hdc 2 together, hdc in each of the next 2 st,* Repeat between * and * join to top of the chain 2 with a sl st.
Round 19: ch2, *hdc 2 tog, hdc into the next st,* Repeat between * and * join to top of the chain 2 with a sl st.
Round 20: ch2, hdc 2 tog, Repeat to the end.
Fasten off leaving an 8” tail. Using your yarn needle, thread the yarn through the stitches and cinch tightly and weave in the ends.
You can also top with a pom pom it you like.
