Mug Rug Free Crochet Pattern

Hi everyone. I am so excited to share my Boho Mug Rug free crochet pattern with you. This attractive mug rug is called the Boho Mug Rug because of the textured stitch and the gorgeous fringes, it truly has a boho vibe. Mug Rugs have recently become a very popular crochet project with makers as they work up so quickly and are so useful. Be careful because they can become addictive as they are su quick and easy to make and are perfect gifts any time of the year.

If you are new to mug rugs and wonder just what they are, they are exactly what the name describes,  they are rugs for your mugs. They are a slightly larger than the regular coasters we usually make for our cups.  Coasters are meant for your glasses and cups, a mug rug is slightly larger. You can even make one big enough so there is room to place a some snacks beside your favourite mug.

Some Other Kitchen Projects You Can Make for Yourself.

If you enjoy making mug rugs and something useful for your home, I have a pattern for a lovely Super Simple Dish Cloth.  This can also double as a spa face cloth.  Something else you can make for your kitchen is my Practically Perfect Potholder. These fun patterns are great as they are a nice sized project that you can pick up and make quite quickly and they don’t need much yarn.

The Blanket Stitch.
Here are the written instructions for how to do the Blanket Stitch.
This stitch uses multiples of 3.
Ch 15 for a sample swatch.
Row 1: DC into the third chain from the hook, make another DC into the same ch, skip two chains and into the next ch make a SC and 2DC, *Skip two chains and make a SC and 2DC into the next ch*. Repeat from * to * across to the last 3 chs, sk2 ch and do one SC and turn.
Row 2: Ch1, Make 2 DC into the base of the ch1 you just made. Skip over the 2DC st from the previous row, “SC, 2 DC” into the SC. You’ll always be looking for the SC to do your “SC, 2 DC” into. Repeat the pattern across ending the last stitch with one single crochet. (When you get to the end, you’ll have two stitches left, just skip one and SC into the last stitch). Turn work.

Instructions for the Boho Mug Rug.
Chain 21
Row 1: DC into the 3rd ch from the hook, make another DC into the same ch.  skip two chains and in the next ch make a  SC, DC, DC, *Skip two chains and make “SC, DC, DC” into the next ch.* Repeat from *to * across to the end and do 1 sc into the last ch, turn work.
Row 2: Ch 1, (this counts as your first SC), make 2 DC into the top of the SC you just made in the row below. Skip over the next 2DC, “SC, 2 DC” into the SC st from the row below. You’ll always be looking for the SC to do your “SC, 2 DC” into. Repeat the pattern across ending the last stitch with one single crochet. (When you get to the end, you have two stitches left, just skip one and SC into the last stitch).
Row 3-16: Repeat Row 2.
Finish off and weave in the ends.

The Fringe: Optional
(These pictures are from another project so the stitches seen are different to the blanket stitch used in your mug rug and there are more strands in each fringe. I am using them here for your reference)
Lay the mug rug on a flat surface with the right side facing up.
For the fringe I cut strands of yarn that are 4” long. I used a business card to wrap my yarn around. I placed 12 fringes across each end of my mug rug, so I wrapped the yarn around the card 24 times, allowing for 2 strands of yarn for each fringe. Then I cut through all the strands on one side of the business card, creating 24 individual 4” long strands.
Each fringe has two, 4” strands of yarn, which are folded, (put the ends together and create the loop that can be threaded into the edge of the mug rug and then knotted on). This creates a 4 stranded fringe.
I use a crochet hook to pull the loops through and then thread the long fringe through the loop and pull tight to create the knot. Here is how I do it.

Mug Rug Free Crochet Pattern

Insert your crochet hook up and through a loop on the edge of the mug rug, do this from the back of the work.
Grab the loop created by folding the strands of yarn. Use a hook that is big enough to hook the yarn and pull through the loop.
Always pull the fringe loop through from the same direction so the knots all match.

Enlarge the loop you have pulled down so it is big enough to bring the long strands down and thread them through this loop.

Pull the loop tight and move on to the next fringe.

I spaced my fringes across the edge of the mug rug.  You can do 12 fringes like I did, or you can customize it and do as many as you like.
Now repeat the process for the other edge of your mug rug.
When you have the fringes done on each edge of your mug rug you can trim the fringe to the preferred length. This is up to your individual taste.
Voila, you now have a beautiful Boho Mug Rug.
