Design Inspiration for my Shamrock Cup Cozy.

St Patrick’s Day is fast approaching and I wanted something special for my followers to make to celebrate this special day . I know that Cup Cozies are very popular as they make up quickly and are wonderful, thoughtful gifts to give or to use in your home. Making a Shamrock applique seemed like a great way to create a seasonal cup cozy that would add to your home’s decor and bring a little Irish charm into the everyday. The Shamrock Cup Cozy is made separately from the shamrock applique, which you sew on to the finished cozy.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn:

You will need worsted weight yarn (4) or Aran in the UK. This is a great project for using up your yarn stash. You can use cotton or acrylic yarn.
Hook: Size I/9 -5.5 mm
Notions:  Tapestry needle and scissors.
Gauge: 12 hdc – 8 hdc rows = 4” (10 cm)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • Sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
US
Half Double Crochet (hdc)
Single Crochet (sc)
UK
Half Treble crochet (htrc)
Double Crochet (dc)

Size:

The finished coffee cup cozy when laid flat measures 4” tall and 4.5“wide approximately. This is so it will stretch and fit snugly when fitted on the beverage cup.

Instructions:

NOTE: This cozy is created in the round.
Chain 24, Join with a slip stitch to the first ch to make a loop. Be careful not to twist the chain.
Round 1: Ch 1, Hdc into the first ch and into each chain around (24 hdc) Join to the top of the ch1 with a sl st.
Round 2: Place a stitch marker (this could be as simple as a piece of contrasting yarn, or a paper clip) sc into the first st, hdc into the next st, hdc into each st until you reach the stitch marker.
Move the stitch marker up.
From now on you will be working hdc in a spiral and it will be a continuous round. Each time you reach the stitch marker you will move it up so you can count the rounds.
I made 7 rounds from the original stitch marker placement.
Next sc into the next st and sl st into the next st.
Fasten off and weave in your ends.
You now have completed the Coffee Cup Cozy.

How to Make the Shamrock Applique

Size:  2.5” tall approximately.

Note: You can make your shamrock larger by using thicker yarn and a bigger hook. If you want a smaller shamrock use a finer yarn and a smaller hook.

Instructions for the Shamrock.

You start this pattern by creating a loop. There are two ways you can do this.
  • Chain 4. Insert your hook into the first chain stitch and join with a slip stitch to create a small loop.
  • Or you can start with a magic loop which you tighten when you have completed the leaves.
Note: There are three leaves on the shamrock.

Work into the centre of the loop

Leaf 1:  ch1, sc into the centre of the ring, ch 3, Make 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc into the centre of the ring.  Chain 3 and sl st into the centre of the ring, sc into ring.
Leaf 2:  Ch 3, Make 1 dc, 1 tr, 1dc into the center of the ring.  Chain 3 and sl st into the centre of the ring, sc into ring.
Leaf 3: Ch 3, Make 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc into the center of the ring.  Chain 3 and sl st into the centre of the ring, sc into ring.
Do not fasten off.

Now to Make the Stem:

Ch 5.
Sl st into the 2nd ch from the hook and into each of the next 3 chains.  Join with a sl st to the first sc you made for the first leaf.
Fasten off. Weave in the ends.
