The Crazy Big Cropped Vest: Free Vest Pattern

crazy big cropped vest

Introducing the The Crazy Big Cropped Vest which is made with a huge 25mm crochet hook and double strands of super bulky yarn and the single crochet stitch.

The Crazy Big Cropped Vest is a free crochet pattern and perfect for autumn and winter days when things begin to cool down. It is made with double strands of super bulky yarn to it works up to a super super bulky oversized vest.

I love modern crochet projects with break with traditions and this is a truly modern vest design.  Oversized sweaters and vests  are huge in the  crochet fashion world and so popular right now.

I used Knit Picks Tuff Puff yarn from We Crochet as I just love the vibrant colours available in this yarn. I would love to see lots of your Crazy Big Cropped Vests in different colours once they are done.

Description of The Crazy Big Cropped Vest.

The Crazy Big Cropped Vest is made up of three rectangles. There are two front pieces and one back piece. To make this Crazy Big Cropped Vest pattern you use single crochet stitches only. It is really a great beginner crochet project.

You will need to do a little sewing when you add the front sections to the back,  but there are very detailed instructions for you to follow. There are also instructions on how to add the trim around the armholes and the front.

Design Inspiration for The Crazy Big Cropped Vest.

The inspiration for my Crazy Big Cropped Vest was the amazing super bulky knit fashions created by Hope Macauly. I wanted to create something bold and slightly rebellious. Something fun and unusual in the crochet world. I used Knit Picks Tuff Puff 100% wool yarn from We Crochet as it has the most amazing colours available.  To create the super luxurious look for the Crazy Big Cropped Vest I used two strands of the super bulky yarn held together.

The Crazy Big Cropped Vest

Pattern by Pam Carr ©2021

Introducing the The Crazy Big Cropped Vest which is made with a huge 25mm crochet hook and double strands of super bulky yarn and the single crochet stitch.

I used Knit Picks Tuff Puff yarn from We Crochet as I just love the vibrant colours available in this yarn. I would love to see lots of your Crazy Big Cropped Vests in different colours once they are done.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: This pattern uses double strands of yarn so it makes it super super bulky. You will be working with two strands held together for the entire pattern.

You will need a super Bulky weight yarn. Look for the (6) on the label. I used Knit Picks Tuff Puff 100% wool yarn from We Crochet.  Remember we are working with double strands of yarn for this Crazy Big Vest. This makes it super, super, bulky.

The Crazy Big Cropped Vest in the pictures is made with the colours

A: Jelly,

B: Chartreuse,

C: Pucker.

D: Pear

You can use any super bulky (6) yarn for this vest but the size may vary slightly.

You can also switch up the colours and the length of each block if you want to use up your stash.

Here are the quantities of yarn you will need to make your Crazy Big Cropped Vest as seen in the photos here in the pattern.

For a solid colour vest you will use less yarn.

NOTE: Tuff Puff skeins are small 100gm skeinds and only have 44 yards in each skein. The yardage may vary if you substitute other (6) super bulky yarn.

Making the colour blocks as in the pattern you will have yarn left over from some of the colours as complete skeins will not be used up. The pattern is flexible if you want to vary the colour blocks to use up yarn you have on hand.

The skeins mentioned here are for Tuff Puff Yarn from We Crochet and they are small skeins of 44 yards/100gm each.

Colours I used

A: Jelly, B: Chartreuse, C: Pucker. D: Pear

XS/S: 616 yards in total. 3 skeins of Colour A, 6 skeins of Colour B, 2 skeins of Colour C, 3 skeins of Colour D.

Medium sizes: 660 yards in total. 3 skeins of Colour A, 7 skeins of Colour B, 2 skeins of Colour C, 3 skeins of Colour D.

L size: 792 yards in total. 4 skeins of Colour A, 7 skeins of Colour B, 3 skeins of Colour C, 4 skeins of Colour D.

XL size: 836 yards in total. 4 skeins of Colour A, 7 skeins of Colour B, 3 skeins of Colour C, 5 skeins of Colour D.

2X/3X: 1,012 yards total. 5 skeins of Colour A, 8 skeins of Colour B, 4 skeins of Colour C,  6 skeins of Colour D.

4X/5X:  1,144 yards total. 6 skeins of Colour A, 9 skeins of Colour B, 4 skeins of Colour C, 7 skeins of Colour D.

Note:

If you substitute yarn, the size may vary slightly, so be sure to measure your panels as you complete them. This is a roomy vest so if the finished size varies slightly it will still look amazing.

Hook: Size U/50 -25 mm
Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle.

Gauge: Using two strands held together as you work.

4 sc stitches X  4 sc rows = 4” (10 cm) with a 25mm hook

(Feel free to go up or down a hook size to get the correct gauge.

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

This pattern uses US terminology.

The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

Sizes:

To fit bust measurement. Remember the size of the vest will be super sized so these sizes are your actual size, not the mesurements for the cardigan.

XS/S:   28”-34” [71-86]
M:  36-38″ [91.5-96.5 cm]
L/XL:
40-42″ [101.5-107 cm]

XL: 44-46” [112-117 cm]

2X/3X:   48-54″ [122-137 cm]

4 X/5X: 56-62″ [142-157 cm]

This is an oversized vest with generous positive ease.

NOTE: This pattern is for a cropped style vest.

If you want to customize your vest hold up the front panels to you and stop at the length you would like your vest to be.

Finished size for the front and back panel.

Size Width

Back.  Sides

Length Armhole drop
XS/S 24”      12” 18” 11”
M 26”      13” 19” 11”
L 29”      14.5” 19” 12”

2X/3X 32”      16” 20” 13”
4X/5X 34”       17” 21” 14”

Instructions:

Note:

Remember you are using two strands of the super bulky yarn held together as you crochet this vest. It creates a very dense and super super bulky vest.

Note:

When reading this pattern the info for the various sizes is displayed with brackets and the sizes are listed like this S/XS (M, L, XL, 2/3X, 4/5X). So you always follow the instructions for your size throughout the pattern.

The Front and Back:

This super bulky vest is made with 3 rectangular pieces which form the back and 2 front panels of the garment.

The Colour Blocks I used are included in the instructions. You will easily see where to change colour.  You may choose to apportion your colours differently according to your yarn choices. Just keep the number of rows the same for all three panels.

Do not count the turning ch as a stitch

Back Panel.

If you are using four colours like I did you can assign each of your colours as A, B, C, D.

This makes it easy for you to substitute your own colours as you create your Crazy Big Cropped Vest.

Construction.

Sewing together the front and back panels.

Place the back panel with the right side facing up and lay the two front panels on top of it with the right side facing down. (right sides together).

Place stitch markers or tie with yarn at the top side edges and where the front panels meet at the neck.

Sew the shoulder seams with a whip stitch. Be sure to do several stitches at the end of each section to ensure it doesn’t come undone with wear.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Side seams.

Lay the vest down as before with the right sides facing.

Measure down 11” (11”, 12”, 12”, 13”, 14”) from the top on each side of the vest and mark with stitch markers or a short piece of yarn.

Note: This measurement is a guide and you can adjust it to fit your size if you need to.

Use pins or stitch markers to join the back and front as you go down the side seams matching up the rows until you get to the bottom edge of the panels.

Using the whip stitch or your preferred method of sewing,  start at the bottom and sew the back and the front sides together. Make sure you are matching the rows as you go.  Stop when you get to the stitch marker at the bottom of the arm hole.

Finish off and weave in the ends.

Do the same on the other side of the cardigan.

Finish off and weave in the ends.

Armhole Trim.

Turn the vest so the right sides are facing out.

With your 25mm hook and 2 strands of Colour A.

Attach yarn at the bottom of the armhole, where the side seams meet.

Ch1 and sc up to the shoulder seam and back down the other side.

Join to the top of the ch1 with a slip st.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Do the same on the second armhole opening.

Front Trim.

Start at the bottom front corner and attach your contrast yarn. We will single crochet up the front edge, across the neck and down the other side.
