The Salish Sea Short Beanie: Free Pattern

Introducing the Salish Sea Short Beanie

short beanie free pattern

This beanie was inspired by a visitor to one of my Christmas Craft Fairs last year. She asked me for a short style beanie. I tried about four different prototypes before finally deciding on this version of a short beanie.
I love the top down construction style and the ribbed brim. It folds up and the beanie sits so nicely on the head. It can also be worn set back on the head.

The Salish Sea Short Beanie is versatile and can be worn with the brim folded down so it transforms into a regular style beanie

I used the Double crochet stitch and an H, 5mm hook for the Salish Sea Short Beanie. It is a top down beanie and it is made in the round so there is no sewing involved.

Inspiration for The Salish Sea Short Beanie Pattern

The inspiration for my Salish Sea Short Beanie pattern was fuelled by requests from market goers for a short or cropped beanie.
When I searched for a short cut beanie online I found the popular Fisherman’s Beanie, which is usually a ribbed knit beanie.  I wanted to create this style and feel but with crochet instead. I played around with single crochet, and also tried doing them from the bottom up, but I never felt satisfied with the look and feel until I made one from the top down and did the ribbing with the fpdc, bpdc method.
I wanted this to be a beginner friendly pattern that also had a great style and fit and judging by the response to the launch of this beanie at the first market of the season here where I live, people are loving them.

I happen to live on a small island in the Salish Sea off the west coast of  Canada, so I thought naming this design the Salish Sea Short Beanie was very fitting.
I took some down to Bennett Bay and took some photos and I thought I would share them with you here.

Are You Looking For Some Other Ideas for Beanies or Hats.

Beanies and hats are such a great crochet project as they don’t take to long to make and you end up with a useful accessory for yourself or to gift to someone or even donate to a charity.
This Slouchy Beanie  pattern is a great idea for someone new to crochet as it is beginner friendly You also might also enjoy my Chunky Beanie Crochet Pattern.  This beanie is really quick to whip up as it uses a large 15mm crochet hook and super bulky (6) weight yarn.
If you know someone who has just undergone chemo and needs a pretty hat to wear that is light and soft to the touch you might want to make them the Diane Beanie.  This is simple to make as it only uses the single crochet stitch.

Are You A Visual Learner

There is a video tutorial for the Salish Sea Short Beanie up on my YouTube Channel.
I have right and left handed video tutorials up for you to follow if you enjoy crochet videos.
There is the right handed version

And here is the left handed version.

Special Stitches used in the brim of the Salish Sea Short Beanie pattern.

For the brim you will do Front Post Double Crochet and Back Post Double Crochet.
Here is a great video tutorial to learn this technique.

FPDC or front post double crochet.
Yarn over, insert hook from the front side of the work to back and then to front again, around the post of the indicated stitch on the previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops, (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops, (1 loop on hook).
BPDC or back post double crochet.
Yarn over, insert hook from the back side of the work to front and to back again around the post of the indicated stitch on the previous row; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through two loops (1 loop on hook)
A tip to remember when working the ribbed brim.
When you work 1 front post double crochet (FPDC) around the post of the double crochet in the row below, this stitch is raised on the surface of the fabric facing you. Always make sure that the post stitches are raised to the same side in each successive row or round. Keep an eye on the ribs and remember: If the stitch you’re working is raised to the front, work a front post stitch; if the stitch is raised to the back, work a back post stitch.

Instructions:
This hat is worked in the round.
Please note that the Ch 2 worked at the beginning of a Round does not count as a stitch.
Do not turn at the end of each Round
