Heart Mug Cozy Description.
The heart mug cozy is made with the simple double crochet stitch so it is beginner friendly. There are so many colour combinations that give it a different feel and vibe. Make it with a dramatic red yarn with a white heart, or for a softer feel use gentle pinks and snowy white. You can make a pair of them for your favourite couple. This mug/cup cozy is a great gift and you can whip it up in an afternoon. Chic, cute and cosy.
This heart mug cozy crochet pattern is a beginner pattern using the double crochet and single crochet stitch at the beginning and end of the cozy. The row of single crochet gives a solid base for sewing on the button. At the button hole end of the cozy, single crochet is used to create the loop to hold the button.
Looking For More Cozies.
Cozies are such quick and easy crochet projects and they make such great gifts. They are a quick way to add warmth to your home and so practical as well as they keep things warm while looking great at the same time. They can also be purely for decoration purposes, adding texture and colour to your home.

Attach your button to the centre of the cozy opposite the loop and use a sewing needle and thread to sew on your button. You can see this done in the video tutorial below on how to make your Valentines Heart Mug Cozy.
(If you want a taller cozy just add extra chains for the foundation row and continue with the pattern as is.)
Mini Heart Applique
Now it is time to move onto the mini heart appliques. These are so incredibly cute and you can use them for so much more than appliques for your cup cozy. You can make book marks with them. They would even make a lovely addition to the pom pom garland I created using mini pom pom. You can see a video tutorial for making the pom pom garland on my YouTube channel.
Here is the pom pom tutorial in case you are interested.
How to make The Mini Heart Applique
The Mini Heart Applique
Instructions:
Using your contrasting yarn and your 5 mm hook make a magic circle. Here is a video on how to make a magic circle.
If you really do not want to begin your heart in this way you can ch 3 and join to make a mini circle to crochet into.
I find this sequence a challenge to follow when written out in a long sentence, so I have broken it up into steps.
Round 1:
Step 1: Chain 3, 3 hdc into the magic circle, (or your mini circle),
Step 2: 3 dc into the circle.
Step 3: ch 1, slip stitch into the circle, ch 1
Step 4: 3 dc into the circle.
Step 5: 3 hdc into the circle. Join to the top of the ch 3 with a slip stitch.
If you made a magic circle this is the time to pull the yarn and tighten it up.
Round 2
Step 1: Chain 3, 1 hdc into each of the next three stitches,
Step 2: 1 dc into the next stitch.
Step 3: 3 dc into the next stitch
Step 4: 2 dc into the next stitch.
Step 5: ch 2, slip stitch into the previous sl st below, ch 2
Step 6: 2 dc into the next stitch.
Step 7: 3 dc into the next stitch
Step 8: 1 dc into the next stitch.
Step 9: 1 hdc into each of the next three stitches, Join to the top of the ch 3 with a slip stitch.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Now is the time to attach the applique to the cozy. I have a full length video tutorial of how to make this mug/cup cozy that shows you in detail how to attach the heart. They are posted above the pattern here on my blog.
To attach the heart I put it about three double crochet rows down from the end of the cozy, centering it. (see the picture above). You can pin it into position and then use the tapestry needle and yarn that is the same colour as your heart to stitch it into place. I go up and down inside the outside stitches of the heart. Fasten off the yarn and weave in the ends.
