This is a quick and easy crochet project which will give you sense of accomplishment in no time at all. It can be made in an afternoon and you can feel so satisfied to have something beautiful to hold, and know that your crochet washcloth is also something that is useful as well.
Having a quick Crochet Washcloth project to whip up allows you to mix things up and it  helps break up your bigger works in progress.

This free Crochet Washcloth Pattern uses the alternating single crochet stitches, which is an easy repeat pattern using the single crochet and the back loop only single crochet, (blo). It is a great stitch for crochet washcloths or dishcloths as well as for hand towels and place mats.

Things you will need before starting your Crochet Washcloth Project

  • A pattern: There is the free crochet washcloth pattern here on my blog. Just scroll further down on my blog post to find it
  • Yarn: I recommend you use a cotton or mostly cotton blend yarn. You will need a worsted weight (4) yarn, commonly referred to as Aran in the UK.
  • A Crochet Hook. You will need an H/5mm crochet hook for this crochet washcloth.
  • You’ll also need scissors and a tapestry or yarn  needle

This pattern is pretty beginner friendly.  As long as you have some basic crochet skills, you will be able to make these crochet washcloths. The single crochet stitch used in this pattern is the first crochet stitch you will learn. Free Crochet Wash Cloth Pattern 

 

Introducing the Alternating Single Crochet Wash Cloth pattern.  How many of you love to crochet dish cloths? They are such a quick and easy project and they make such wonderful gifts at any time of the year. 
The Alternating Single Crochet Wash Cloth is a perfect beginner pattern for a dish cloth.  It is easy to remember and made with one of the first stitches you will learn when you start to crochet, the single crochet stitch. 
In this pattern you will simply be alternating the single crochet stitch with a single crochet into the back loop only stitch.

Free Crochet Wash Cloth Pattern 

 

Supplies for the Alternating Single Crochet Wash Cloth.

Yarn: Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (4) or Lily Sugar n Cream Solids
Hook: H/8-5.00mm
Notions: Scissors and a yarn needle
Gauge: 12 sc x 13 sc rows = 4” (10 cm) using an H hook 
 

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • Sl st = slip stitch
  • st = stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • scblo = single crochet back loop only

Special Stitch for this Pattern.

 Single Crochet Back Loop Only SC BLO
There is a front loop and back loop for every stitch, which resembles the letter “V“.
The back loop is the part of the V that is furthest away from you when crocheting. The front loop is the part of the V that is closest to you when
To make a sc blo the stitch is made into the back loop of the stitch below. You do not go through both the loops (the ‘V’) of the previous stitch, just the one at the back.

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US
Single Crochet (sc)
UK
Double crochet (dc)

Size:

  Finished Size: 8.5” wide and 8.5” tall approximately

Instructions:

Ch27
Row 1: sc into the 2nd ch from the hook and sc into each st across, ch1 and turn. (26)
Row 2:  sc into the first st, scblo into the next stitch, *sc into the next st, scblo into the next st,* repeat between * and * to the end of the row, ch1 and turn (26)
Row 3-26: Repeat Row 2.
Row 27: sc into the first st and into every stitch across. (26)
Do not fasten off.

Side Trim

Turn work and work down the side of the wash cloth.
Ch1, make 1 single crochet into the end of each row to the bottom corner. Join with a sl st to the 1st st of the bottom row.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Now to do the trim on the other side of your cloth.
Attach the yarn to the bottom corner and work up this side of the wash cloth.
Ch1 and make 1 sc into the end of each of the rows until you get to the top corner.
Join with a sl st to the 1st st of the top row.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

  2. On the line Rows 3 – 26 it says repeat Row 3. Shouldn’t that say repeat Row 2?
