Meet The Sideways Granny Stripe Baby Blanket

Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Introducing my new Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern:

The Sideways Granny Stripe Baby Blanket

This is  a gorgeous beginner friendly Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern made with the granny stripe stitch and worsted weight yarn. I designed this baby blanket as a shower present. I thought these colours would make a gentle blanket perfect for a new babies cot or for a little one to lie on the floor on when it needs a good kick and practice learning to roll over.
I am so excited to share this Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern  with you here on my blog.

Why the Sideways Blanket.

I called it the Sideways Blanket as it is made with the foundation chain being the length of the blanket. So as you work up the blanket your are creating it width ways and the stripes will appear to be vertical when the blanket is completed.
This Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern has a gorgeous texture and makes for a great gift.

Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Introducing my Sideway’s Granny Stripe Baby Blanket Pattern Free Pattern here on my blog.  This blanket is a beginner friendly blanket made with worsted weight (4) yarn (Aran in the UK).
This baby blanket is so soft and cosy with a beautiful texture.  It is a striped blanket made with two colours. The stripes vary in width and this it adds a modern touch to your nursery. I made the blanket sideways so the stripes are vertical. The foundation chain is for the length of the blanket and then. you work up to create the width of the blanket. This creates a unique look.
This modern contemporary design is a simple pattern for beginners.
For those new to crochet, I have a video tutorial on youtube that will demonstrate how to make the double crochet and single crochet stitches. I have right and left handed tutorials there.
So here we go, good luck.

Special Stitch for this Pattern.

The Granny Stripe Stitch.

This is how you make the granny stripe stitch when working flat.
Make a chain of multiples of 3 plus 3 more chains for the turning ch.
Row 1: Dc into the 3rd ch from the hook, *Skip 2 chain stitches, then work 3dcs into the next chain stitch*, (this is called a shell). Repeat between * and * until there are two stitches left, sk1 st, work 2 dc into the last st.
You should have a row that begins and ends with 2dc’s. on either side of all your shells.
For the next row you will be working into the spaces between the 3dc shells of the previous row.
Row 2: Ch 3, work 3dc stitches (a shell) into the first sp between the 2dcs at the end of the previous row and the next 3 dc shell.  Work a 3dc shell into each space across.  At the end of the row, work 1 dc into the top of the ch3 made at start of previous row. Turn work.
Row 3:   Ch 3, 1 dc in the same space as the ch 3, work a 3dc shell into each space between the shells of the previous row until the end of the row, work 2 dc into the top of the turning chain from the previous row. Turn work.
Rows 2 and 3 are repeated to make the traditional granny stripe stitch when working flat.

Instructions:

Notes: This blanket is worked width ways. The foundation chain is the length of the blanket.
To change colors, work to the last 2 loops on the final dc of the first color. Draw the new color through the last 2 loops of your double crochet and proceed with new color.
If you want a bigger blanket remember to always increase by multiples of 3 so the pattern will work out. In this pattern the starting chain is for the length of the blanket and not the width.
Start with pink.
Chain 141 (46 multiples of 3 plus 3 for the turning chain, which in this blanket acts as the first dc ). Remember to chain loosely.
Row 2: Chain 3, then work 3dc stitches (a shell) into the first sp between the 2dcs at the end of the previous row and the next 3 dc shell.  Work a 3dc shell into each space across.  At the end of the row, work 1 dc into the top of the ch3 made at start of previous row. Turn work.
Row 3:   Ch 3, 1 dc in same space as the ch 3, work a 3dc shell into each space to the end of the row, work 2 dc into the top of the turning chain from the previous row. Turn work.
Rows 2 and 3 are repeated to make the traditional granny stripe stitch when working your blanket.

Here is the colour pattern I used:

(When you are switching colours, pull through with the new colour on your last double crochet at the end of the row when you have two loops left on your hook.)
Rows 1-12:  12 rows of soft pink
Rows 13-18: 6 rows of white
Rows 19-30: 12 rows of soft pink
 Rows 31- 34: 4 rows of white
Rows 35-38:  4 rows of soft pink
Rows 39-42: 4 rows of white
Rows 43-54   12 rows of soft pink
Rows 55-60: 6 rows of white
Rows 61-72: 12 rows of soft pink

Blanket Border:

Row 1: Join white yarn using a sl st to the corner of your Blanket. Ch1, make 2 sc into the same corner. Work sc evenly down the side of your blanket, (I made a sc into the end of each row), make 3sc into the corner. Make 1 sc into each stitch along the bottom of your blanket, make 3sc into the corner. Go up the other side with sc as you did for the first side, make 3sc into the corner, work across the top of the blanket making a sc into each stitch across. Join with a sl st to the top of the first st of the 3sc corner shell.
Row 2: ch2, make 2 more dc into the same st, dc into each stitch around the blanket border, making 3dc into each corner from the previous row.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Now you have a beautiful Sideways Granny Stitch Baby Blanket.
