The Oh So Soft Baby Blanket

Pattern by Pam Carr ©2022

Introducing the Oh So Soft Baby Blanket Pattern.  This blanket is a beginner friendly blanket made with super soft Sweet Snuggles Lite Yarn. It is a super bulky yarn and works up really quickly.

This blanket is so soft, chunky and cosy.  It is a striped blanket made with three pastel colours, separated by two rows of white. This blanket adds a modern touch to your nursery.

I love the V-stitch pattern used in this blanket. It adds texture and works up quickly and easily.

I have used a super bulky acrylic chenille style yarn, but any super bulky yarn will work.

This modern contemporary design is a simple pattern for beginners.

For those new to crochet, I have a video tutorial on youtube that will demonstrate how to make the double crochet for you, as well as how to do the v stitch.

So here we go, good luck.

The Oh So Soft Baby Blanket Pattern.

Finished Size: The blanket is about 35″ by 40″ approx

Supplies you will need:
Yarn:

4 skeins of Loops and Threads Sweet Snuggles Lite Yarn, super bulky (6).

Each skein is 192 yds/7.6 oz or 176 m/220g.  You will have yarn left over after your blanket is made.

If you choose to adapt the pattern and make it bigger, then you may need more yarn.

I used these colours for my blanket.

1 skein each of Sweet Snuggles Lite yarn in:

Lemon Drop

White

Taffy

Wave

Hook: Size L/11  8.00 mm crochet hook
Notions: Scissors , tapestry needle.

Gauge: 6HDC x 5 rows = 4.5”x4.5”

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • Ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • dc = Double crochet

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US

Double crochet (dc)

UK

Treble (tr)

NOTE:

The Ch 2 at start of each row does count as a stitch

How to change colours at the end of a row.

-begin to make the final dc stitch into the turning ch from the row below

         – before you finish this last DC, when you still have two loops on your hook, change to the new colour and pull it through these two loops.

–Continue to work with the new colour and cut the previous colour, leaving a long tail to weave into the blanket.

Instructions:

Start with Lemon Drop

Chain 56 loosely.

Row 1:  Make 2DC into the 4th chain from the hook, skip the next chain, *2 DC into the next chain, skip the next chain*. Repeat from between * to * across the row until 2 chains remain. Skip 1 chain, then make 1 DC into the very last chain and turn work.

Row 2:  CH 3. Work 2 DC in the space between the second and third DC stitches, (forming a “V.”) *Skip 2 stitches, then work 2 DC in between the next pair of DC from previous row*.  Repeat from * to * across to the end of the row. Make 1 DC into the top of the turning chain. Turn work.

Rows 3-6: Repeat row 2 with Lemon Drop.

Rows 7-8: Repeat row 2 with White.

Rows 9-14: Repeat row 2 with Taffy.

Rows 15-16: Repeat row 2 with White.

Rows 17-22: Repeat row 2 with Wave.

Rows 23-24: Repeat row 2 with White.

Rows 25-30: Repeat row 2 with Lemon Drop.

Rows 31-32: Repeat row 2 with White.

Rows 33-38: Repeat row 2 with Pink.

Rows 39-40: Repeat row 2 with White.

Rows 41-46: Repeat row 2 with Lemon Drop.

Fasten off and weave in all the ends.

Blanket Border

Start in the top corner ready to work down the side of the blanket.

Attach white yarn.

CH 3. Make *2 DC into the same space to form the first corner. Then begin working down the side of the blanket, making 2DC into the end of the 1st row, then 2 DC into each of the spaces at the end of each row as you work down the side of the blanket. Work 3 DCs into the corner.

Now working across the bottom of the blanket, work 1 DC into each stitch across the bottom of the blanket. Work 3 DCs into the corner.

Continue working around the blanket, working along the other side and the top as described above. Remember to always make 3DCs into each corner.

Join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch3 starting chain when you are back where you began the border.

Fasten off and weave in the ends.
