Spring Iris Cowl Free Crochet Pattern

Introducing the Spring Iris  Cowl Free Crochet Pattern. This is a great lightweight spring cowl style scarf perfect for beginners.
This is a spring version of the Iris Cowl Pattern I released in the winter. The original  pattern was made with a super bulky yarn. The Spring Iris Cowl is made with a lighter weight yarn.
This  lacy cowl  pattern is a lighter style circle scarf made with a medium worsted weight (4)   yarn and it looks so elegant and is super trendy.
You can make this Spring Iris Cowl free crochet pattern with the Iris Crochet Stitch, which uses the double crochet stitch and ch stitches to create the clusters.

I wanted to make this modern and elegant design as a simple pattern for beginners. Often as a beginner  it is hard to find simple patterns that have the reward of an accessory you can make that is something you can wear with pride. The Iris Stitch makes the airy stitches that make this scarf lacy and perfect for spring.

Description of The Spring Iris Cowl Free Crochet Pattern.

The Iris Spring Cowl is a light weight spring accessory that you can make using the iris stitch and it is easy to make as a gift for a friend or family. The Spring Iris Cowl free crochet pattern is made with worsted weight yarn, (4) and I use Lion Brand Pound of Love Yarn.  You can make it with any worsted weight yarn.
This easy Spring Iris Cowl is made using the double crochet stitch in clusters separated by a  ch1 to create the shell like lacy stitch. It is made in the round so there is no sewing involved.
Here is a close up of how beautiful the Iris Crochet looks.

Introducing the Spring Iris Cowl, a great light weight cowl style scarf perfect for adventurous beginners.
This is a super easy circle scarf made with Lion Brand Pound of Love (4) worsted weight yarn and it looks so elegant and lacy. You may use any worsted weight (4) yarn for this project.
The Spring Iris Cowl is made with the Iris crochet stitch, which is a variation using the double crochet stitch. I have the written instructions below.

The Spring Iris Cowl.

Size:

Finished Scarf Size: 21”-22“/ 53-56 cm in circumference approximately.
11” / 27-29cm wide
9.5” /24cm tall.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: 1 skein of worsted weight (4) yarn. I used Lion Brand Pound of Love (4) yarn. This is a huge 16oz/454g skein and I used Quartz for the cowl in these photos. You will have a lot of left-over yarn if you use the same yarn I did.
You can happily substitute any (4) worsted weight yarn for this cowl, such as Red Heart Super Save or Vanna’s Choice etc.
Hook: K/10.5 – 6.50 mm.
Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.
Gauge: 3 Iris Stitch clusters and 6 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

sc = single crochet

st or sts – stitch or stitches
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sk = skip
ch sp = chain space
dc = double crochet

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
US
Single crochet (sc)
 double crochet (dc)
UK
Double crochet (dc)
Treble (tr)

Special Stitch for the Pattern:

The Iris Stitch.

This is a lacy stitch with a great texture. Here is how to make it when working with a flat piece. For a flat piece you start with a multiple of 4.
Row 1. Ch 3, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the next st, *sk3 st, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in the next st, * repeat from * to * until 2 st remain, sk a st, dc into the last st.  Turn work.
Row 2: Ch 3, *(2Dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.*, Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, make a dc into the top of the turning ch3 from the previous row. Turn work.
Repeat Row 2
Increasing and decreasing the pattern for the cowl which is made in the round.
In the round you always start with multiples of 4 plus 2.
For the Iris Cowl I used: 4 x 18 = 72 plus 2 makes 74. This means you start with a chain of 74.
To make a smaller cowl circumference you can use 4 less stitches and start with 70.
To make it larger go up 4 and start with a chain of 78.

Instructions:

This scarf is worked in the round so you do not turn at the end of each round.
 Please note that the Ch 3 worked at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
Chain 72 and join with a sl st into the first chain to form a ring, being careful not to twist the chain.
Round 1: Ch1, sc into each ch around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch1. (71 sc)
 Round 2 Ch3, sk2, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next st, *sk3, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next st * repeat from * to * until last 2 sts, sk2, join with a sl st in top of 3ch (17 fan sets made)
Round 3: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (17 fan sets made)
Round 4: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (17 fan sets made)
Round 5: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (17 fan sets made)
Round 6: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (17 fan sets made)
Rounds 7-14: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (17 fan sets made)
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
