The Sunny Preemie Baby Blanket Pattern

Introducing the “Sunny Preemie” Baby Blanket Pattern by Carroway Crochet.
The Sunny Preemie Baby Blanket is perfect for a small preemie baby and has a beautiful texture and makes up into a very soft and cozy blanket to wrap a precious preemie baby in. I used Loops and Threads Impeccable Speckle Yarn in the colour Sunrise.
It is a beginner friendly pattern, and it has easy to follow instructions. It uses the half double crochet stitch to create a 16.5” by 19” baby blanket. I have clearly written instructions below.
You are also more than welcome to contact me with any questions you have about the instructions.
The Sunny Preemie Baby Blanket.
Size: 16.5”x 19”
Supplies you will need:
Yarn: Category (4) Worsted Weight Yarn in any color of your choosing.
I recommend a yarn that is soft to the touch.
I used Loops and Threads Impeccable Speckle Stripes. Each Skein has 160 yards/3 ounces or 146 metres/85 g.
You will need approximately 500 – 550 yards.
Hook: H-5.00mm
Notions: Yarn Needle, Scissors.
Gauge: 12 hdc x 9 rows of hdc stitch = 4” x 4” square
Abbreviations (uses US conventions)
-
Ch = chain
-
st = stitch
-
sc = single crochet
-
hdc = half double crochet
-
blo = back loop only
-
hdcblo = half double crochet back loop only
Special Stitch for this Pattern:
For this blanket you need to do the back loop only half double crochet stitch.
It is the simple half double crochet stitch, but it is done by working your hdc into the back loop (blo) of the stitch, and this is what creates the rib pattern.
There is a great video showing how to work into the back loop only of a stitch on YouTube. This video is for the single crochet, but the technique of working a hdc into the back loop only is the same. I hope this helps you understand how to do it.
This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.
USSingle Crochet (sc)Half Double crochet (hdc) |
UKDouble crochet (dc)Half Treble (htr) |

Start in the top corner ready to work down the side of the blanket.
Attach yarn.
CH 1. Make 2 SC into the same space to form the first corner. Then begin working down the side of the blanket, making 1 SC into the end of the 1st row, then 1 SC into the end of each row as you work down the side of the blanket. Work 3 SCs into the corner.
Now working across the bottom of the blanket, work 1 SC into each stitch across the bottom of the blanket. Work 3 SCs into the corner.
Continue working around the blanket, working along the other side and the top as described above. Remember to always make 3 SCs into each corner.
Join with a slip stitch to the top of the ch1 starting chain when you are back where you began the border.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
