This cowl free crochet pattern is a super cozy circle scarf made with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (6) super bulky yarn and it looks so elegant and is super trendy.
You can make this Iris Cowl free crochet pattern with the Iris Crochet Stitch, which is a uses the double crochet stitch.
I wanted to make this modern and elegant design as a simple pattern for beginners. Often as a beginner it is hard to find simple patterns that have the reward of an accessory you can wear with pride. The Iris Cowl free crochet pattern is one of those patterns. Using the large hook makes the airy stitches that make this scarf lacy while being cozy.

Description of The Iris Cowl Free Crochet Pattern.
The Iris Cowl free crochet pattern is made with super bulky weight yarn, (6) and I use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn. It is a wool acrylic blend and the 20% wool in this yarn makes it super warm and so soft and easy to wear. This yarn is the go to yarn for makers as it is so quick to work up and makes the softest projects imaginable. It also comes in a huge selections of gorgeous colours. I used the grey for the ones in this picture.
This easy Iris Cowl is made using the double crochet stitch to create the shell like lacy stitch. It is made in the round so there is no sewing involved.
Here is a close up of how beautiful the Iris Crochet looks worked up on the large Q hook.

This is a super cozy circle scarf made with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (6) super bulky yarn and it looks so elegant and lacy.
You can make this Iris Cowl with the Iris crochet stitch, which is a variation using the double crochet stitch. I have the written instructions below.
The Iris Cowl Scarf

Size:
Finished Scarf Size: 28“/ 71 cm in circumference approximately.
10” / 25.5 cm tall.
Supplies you will need:
Yarn: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Super bulky (6) yarn.
Hook: size, Q US- 15-16.00 mm.
Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.
Gauge: 1.5 Iris Stitch clusters and 3 rows = 4” (10 cm)
Abbreviations (uses US conventions)
st or sts – stitch or stitches
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sk = skip
ch sp = chain space
dc = double crochet
sc = single crochet
This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

Special Stitch for the Pattern:
The Iris Stitch.
This is a lacy stitch with a great texture. Here is how to make it when working with a flat piece. For a flat piece you start with a multiple of 4.
Row 1. Ch 3, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) into the next st, *sk3 st, (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in the next st, * repeat from * to * until 2 st remain, sk a st, dc into the last st. Turn work.
Row 2: Ch 3, *(2Dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.*, Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, make a dc into the top of the turning ch3 from the previous row. Turn work.
Repeat Row 2
Increasing and decreasing the pattern for the cowl which is made in the round.
Always start with multiples of 4 plus 2.
For the Iris Cowl I used: 4 x 9 = 36 plus 2 makes 38. This means you start with a chain of 38.
To make a smaller cowl circumference you can use 4 less stitches and start with 34.
To make it larger go up 4 and start with a chain of 42.
Instructions:
This scarf is worked in the round so you do not turn at the end of each round.
Please note that the Ch 3 worked at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
Chain 38 and join with a sl st into the first chain to form a ring, being careful not to twist the chain.
Round 1: Ch1, sc into each ch around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch1. (37sc)
Round 2 Ch3, sk2, [2dc, ch1, 2dc] in next st, *sk3, [2dc, ch1, 2dc] in next st * repeat from * to * until last 2 sts, sk2, join with a sl st in top of 3ch (9 fan sets made)
Round 3: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (9 fan sets made)
Round 4: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (9 fan sets made)
Round 5: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (9 fan sets made)
Round 6: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (9 fan sets made)
Round 7: Ch 3, *(2dc, ch1, 2dc) in next ch1 sp.* Repeat between * and * to the end of the row, join with a sl st to the top of the ch3. (9 fan sets made)
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
