The Merry and Bright Tea Cozy: Free Crochet Pattern
I am so excited to share my free crochet pattern for the “Merry and Bright Tea Cozy” with you. It is so much fun with its colourful stripes and fabulous flower topper. It will keep your tea piping hot during the winter weather. I hope you enjoy making it as much as I did. I had a custom order for a striped multi-colour tea cozy last summer and thought I could adapt it to make it work for Christmas home decor too.

The Inspiration Behind My Merry and Bright Tea Cozy.
Growing up with English parents, tea is my go to hot beverage. Where other’s rely on coffee to get them going in the morning, I have to have a cup of tea. Making it in a mug is all well and good but it doesn’t have the same sense of ritual and tradition that brewing your tea in a warmed tea pot does.
As Christmas approaches and I am being asked for seasonally themed home decor items, I thought I would create a cheerful tea cozy pattern that would be sure to brighten your table setting. What better way to start your day than with a morning cuppa’ and a bright and cheerful tea cozy placed onto your steaming hot tea pot.

Description of the The Merry and Bright Tea Cozy.
This contemporary and cool design is a simple pattern for beginners. It features red and white stripes that are each made up of two rows of hdc made into the back loop only. There is also a wonderful flower topper that is made up of chained loops. I love the whimsy this topped brings to the tea cozy.
You can make this cheerful tea cozy with beginner crochet stitches and the latest colours in home decor. For those new to crochet, I have videos on how to do the half double crochet stitch and the back loop only half double crochet stitch on my YouTube channel. They are the only stitches you need to know in order to make this Merry and Bright Tea Cozy.

Introducing the Merry and Bright Tea Cozy Pattern. This Tea Cozy is such a modern, and bright way to keep your tea warm on any day of the year.
The Christmas colours used for this Tea Cozy make it perfect for your seasonal home décor. It is made with the simple half double crochet stich and so it is also a beginner friendly project.
For those new to crochet, there are many videos on my Carroway Crochet YouTube channel. There are right and left handed video tutorials to demonstrate the half double crochet stitch
The Merry and Bright Tea Cozy
Finished Cozy Size:
18-20“/48-51 cm in circumference.
Supplies you will need:
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (4) or Aran in the UK.
I used two colours to make this fit with the Christmas theme, but you could make each row a different colour and use this pattern as a stash busting project. The cozy pictured here was made using Red Heart Super Saver, a 100% acrylic yarn. This one is red and white, but the colour choice is up to you.
Hook: Size US – H /8, 5.00 mm.
Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.
Gauge: 12 hdc – 7 rows = 4” (10 cm)
Special Stitch for this project.
For this tea cozy you need to do the half double crochet back loop only stitch.
It is the simple half double crochet stitch, but it is done into the back loop of the stitch and this is what creates the rib pattern.
I created a video showing how to do this technique with the single crochet stitch and posted it onto youtube for you. I hope this helps you understand the concept.
Abbreviations (uses US conventions)
-
Ch = chain
-

Instructions:
Note: The ch 1 at start of each row does not count as a stitch
This tea cozy is made in two identical sections, the front and the back.
I change colours every two rows as this allows you to carry the colours across the top and creates less ends to weave in at the end. You can change colours every row if that is the look you want, but you will have lots of ends to weave in at the end.
Start with red
Chain 26
Row 1: hdc into the 2nd ch from the hook, hdc across the row, turn work (25 stitches)
Row 2: ch1, hdc blo into the first stitch and into each st across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to white.
Rows 3-4: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 5-6: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to white.
Rows 7-8: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 9-10: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to white.
Rows 11-12: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 13-14: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to white.
Rows 15-16: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Change to red.
Rows 17-18: ch1, hdc blo into the first st and into every across the row, turn work. (25 stitches)
Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing side seams.
Make another but start and end with white, so when you put the back and frond together the stripe pattern continues around the tea cozy.
Assemble the Tea Cozy.
You will have two pieces like this before weaving in the ends..
With right sides together sew up from the bottom 2” (approximately, as this can vary according to the style of your teapot) using the whip stitch. Do this on each side. Weave in the ends.
At the top of the right-hand side sew down 4”- 4 1⁄2“using the whip stitch and weave in the ends.
At the top of the left-hand side sew down 3” approx.. Weave in the ends.
With a long piece of yarn do a running stitch around the top of the tea cozy. Pull and gather tightly. Using your yarn needle run the yarn thread back and forth through the gathered top to create a tidy looking finish.

Instructions for the Flower Topper
There are two sections for the flower topper. They are placed on top of one another and sewn together before placing it on the cozy.
Bottom of the flower.
I used red.
Make a magic circle
Row 1: ch2, make 12 dc into the circle.
Row 2: ch20, join with a sl st to the next st, *ch20, join with a sl st to the next st*, repeat between * and * around to the end. You will have 12, 20 ch loops.
Finish off leaving a long tail to join the two layers of the flower together.
Top layer of the flower.
I used white.
Make a magic circle
Row 1: ch1, make 12 sc into the circle.
Row 2: *ch10, join with a sl st to the next st, ch8, join with a sl st to the next st, ch 12, join with a slst to the next ch,* repeat between * and * around to the end. You will have 12 loops of varied lengths.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
Construction on the flower topper.
Place the white smaller section on top of the red bottom piece. With a yarn needle thread the red yarn up through the centre of the white piece. Go back down through the edge of the sc circle that began the white flower and down through the red piece. Come back up through the centre of both pieces and go back down through the edge of the sc circle. Repeat to create a cross (see the picture above) or make more stitches to create a star. When the two sections are joined in the centre you fasten off and leave any remaining tail to attach it to the top of the cozy. If there is not enough yarn to join the flower topper to the cozy then weave in the end and get new yarn for attaching it to your tea cozy.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
You now have a fabulous Merry and Bright Tea Cozy.
