Description of  The Feelin’ Fine Fringe Bag:

The Feelin’ Fine Fringe Bag is created in the round and worked from the bottom up. The base is started on the original chain, where you work down both sides of the chain, creating the shape of the body of the bag,  and then you continue up to make the sides. You will make a special trim at the top of the bag with the simple back loop single crochet stitch. This creates a cute definition to the top rows.

The Feelin’ Fine Fringe Bag has a button and loop fastener and has a crochet handle that is tied on to the bag.  This means you can remove the strap whenever you want your bag to serve as a clutch. The Feelin’ Fine Fringe bag makes a great gift.

Don’t forget to pin it for later so you don’t lose it.

Design Inspiration for The Feelin’ Fine Fringe Bag.

The inspiration for my free Feelin’ Fine Fringe Bag crochet pattern came from a bag I used to have back in the day. It was a fabric bag that had a shoulder strap and I used to use it all the time. I wanted to make a smaller version and I was thinking of making a bag for children at the time. I had my market stall and wanted to make some items that children would be drawn to and that I could sell to them for a reasonable amount of money. I came up with my fringe bag and the little ones loved it.

However, there were also some older market goers who loved it so here it is. If you want to make it bigger, just increase the amount of chains you use at the beginning and make it as described in the pattern.

All About the Yarn.

For this pattern I decided to use Red Heart Super Saver yarn as it comes in so many vibrant and fun colours and also it is a very strong acrylic yarn that will hold up well to the weight that a full bag will have to carry. Red Heart Super Save yarn is so versatile and can be used in so many different types of projects. I use it for some of my Dreamer Beanies and also for my Black and White Striped Cushion pattern. It is also great for Cozies for your Tea Pots, Mason Jars or even your mugs.

For my Feelin’ Fine Fringe Bag it meets two of my top needs. It is strong and serviceable and it comes in all the great Red Heart colours that we all love.

Colourways:

Red Heart Super Saver yarn comes in 149 different colourways. 149!!! It comes in solid, prints and multis, flecks and heathers, and striped colours. You don’t even have to worry about matching dye lots as the colours never deviate. It is such a user friendly yarn.

Red Heart Super Save is a medium weight worsted weight yarn with a number 4 on the label.

The solid colour skeins are 7 oz (198 grams) and approximately 364 yards (333 metres). If you get the striped colours then they run smaller weighing 5 oz (14 grams) and 236 yards approx, or 215 metres

Care instructions for Red Heart Super Saver.

Another big plus for Red Heart Super Save yarn is that it is so easy to care for.You can wash and dry it in your machines. It is suggested you wash it in warm water and tumble dry. Do not bleach or iron your project. s

The Feelin’ Fine Fringe Bag is so handy for short or long shopping trips as it will accommodate your wallet and all your cards. You can make it with your choice of worsted weight yarn, either acrylic or cotton, just look for the number (4) on the yarn label.

It is a beginner crochet pattern, with easy to follow instructions.  It is in US terms.

Gauge: 13 sc – 14 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Abbreviations (uses US conventions)

  • st = stitch
  • dc = Double crochet
  • sc =Single crochet
  • blsc = back loop single crochet

Special Stitches Used:

BLSC or the Back Loop Single Crochet Stitch:  To work the BLSC you insert your hook into the back loop of the next stitch and continue to complete the SC.

I have a video tutorial on my youtube channel.

This pattern uses US terminology. The US and UK crochet terms are different, but they use the same terms to describe different stitches. Here is a simple conversion chart for anyone in the UK.

US

Double crochet (dc)

Single crochet (sc)

Here is a close up of the top trim.

Finish off. Weave in ends.

Button Loop.

Locate the centre of your bag at the back of your bag.

Here is how you can do it easily.

Count across 5 stitches from the side and join yarn into the 6th st.

Ch 13, skip a stitch and join to the 8th st with a sl st.

Finish off. Weave in ends.

Sew on your button on the front of your bag, making sure to match it up to your loop fastener.

Handle/Strap

Ch 110, sc back down the chain and finish off, weave in the ends.

Attach your strap to the bag by threading the strap into a space in the sc, between the two top sc rows, tie with a simple knot.  This makes it a removable handle. If you want it permanently affixed to the bag, then you can sew it on with matching yarn.

Adding Fringe

Cut yarn in the colour you want for your fringe. You will need two strands for each section of fringe. If you want a heavier fringe, or a longer fringe, you can adapt the pattern to suit your style.

For the fringe to be approx 4” long, cut strands of yarn that are 9” as you will be folding them and lose some length in the knot.

Each fringe has two 9” strands of yarn, which are folded, (put the ends together and create the loop that can be threaded into the bottom of the bag and then knotted onto the purse.) This creates a four stranded fringe.

I use a crochet hook to pull the loops through and then thread the long fringe through the loop and pull tight to create the knot.

Always pull the loop through from the same direction so the knots all match.

And now you have a cute little fringed bag. Enjoy.
