The Rustic Tea Cozy: Free Crochet Pattern

The Rustic Tea Cozy Free Crochet Pattern.

Are you looking for an easy yet beautiful tea cozy pattern?
I am so excited to share my free crochet pattern for the “Rustic Tea Cozy” with you. I was lucky enough to be gifted this beautiful handspun yarn. It is a Romney/Alpaca wool blend and hand dyed in the most beautiful shades of greens and and browns. This means that this tea crochet tea cozy has such a great texture and tactile appeal. It is perfect if you love the natural look and cottage core home decor. The beautiful  flower topper is a great way to finish it off.
This ribbed style cozy will keep your tea piping hot year round. I hope you enjoy making it as much as I did.
You can make it with an acrylic yarn as well.

The Inspiration Behind the Rustic Tea Cozy.

I was recently gifted some beautiful hand spun, hand dyed wool yarn.  This gives me the opportunity to work with a  natural  material and create the perfect tea cozy for my earthen cob home.
I am late to the Cottage core trend, but it seems like it is here to stay for a while as escapism and simplicity are themes that continue to resonate with people as we seek a simpler lifestyle.
I think the Rustic Tea Cozy is a great way to start my home decor collection and fill my home with a simple, natural style.

Rustic Tea Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

Description of the The Rustic Tea Cozy.

The Rustic Tea Cozy is a simple crochet pattern for beginners. It uses a natural or acrylic yarn and is made with two identical crochet panels. These panels are made by repeating rows of hdc made into the back loop only. This creates a ribbed tea cozy that has lots of stretch to it.
The Rustic Tea Cozy also a wonderful crocheted flower topper. I love the whimsy this two layered flower topper brings to the tea cozy.
You can make this homey tea cozy with beginner crochet stitches and colours found in nature, to add a calm and warmth to your home. For those new to crochet, I have  videos on how to do the half double crochet stitch and the back loop only half double crochet stitch on my YouTube channel. They are the only stitches you need to know in order to make the panels for the Rustic Tea Cozy.

The Rustic Tea Cozy: Free Crochet Pattern

Finished Cozy Size: 18-20“/48-51 cm in circumference.

Supplies you will need:

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (4) or Aran in the UK.
I used a hand spun Romney and Alpaca Blend, but you could make it with commercial worsted weight yarn. You could also try Loops and Threads Impeccable for this cozy.
Hook: Size US – I/9, 5.50 mm.
Notions: Tapestry needle and scissors.
Gauge: 12 hdc – 7 rows = 4” (10 cm)
Special Stitch for this project.
For this tea cozy you need to do the half double crochet back loop only stitch.
It is the simple half double crochet stitch, but it is done into the back loop of the stitch and this is what creates the rib pattern.
I created a video showing how to do this technique with the single crochet stitch and posted it onto youtube for you. I hope this helps you understand the concept.

Assemble the Tea Cozy.

Lay the pieces out so the ribbing is going up and down.
With right sides together sew up from the bottom 2” (approximately, as this can vary according to the style of your teapot) using the whip stitch. Do this on each side. Weave in the ends.

Attaching the Flower Topper.

Place the flower on top of the tea cozy, centring it over the top where it is gathered.
Thread your yarn needle and bring it up through the centre of the flower. Go up and down through the centre circle several times to secure the flower to the tea cozy. This way the flower is sewn in place and the outer petals free to stand up.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.
